With the recent news of the Fannie and Freddie takeover, it is vital that we take steps to ensure that taxpayers are protected as Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson and Director of the new Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA), Jim Lockhart, launch their four part plan to stabilize the two mortgage giants.

On one hand, I’m satisfied that the FHFA is acting swiftly to secure the GSE’s, and is incrementally doing so to maximize American taxpayer protection. However, we must all be concerned and keep a watchful eye on the plan as it moves forward to ensure that already struggling taxpayers are not left footing the bill for this multi-billion-dollar bail-out program.

While monitoring the plans progress, it is vital that we reform the institutions so that the same thing doesn’t happen again in the future. I believe that once Fannie and Freddie are ready to be released from government control, they should be privatized. Similar to Ma Bell, we should break up the GSE’s and have smaller, privatized mortgage companies. By doing that, we will ensure that we do not go through this exercise in the years ahead. The bottom line is that the taxpayer must be fully protected while we work to stabilize the market.

Barack's New Campaign Song
I went home with the netrooters
The way I always do
How was I to know
They were with the
Russians, too?

I was pandering to Havana
I took a little risk
Send lawyers, guns and money
Bill, get me out of this, hyeah

I'm the innocent bystander
Somehow I got stuck
Between the Mac
and a Palin
And I'm down on my luck
Yes I'm down on my luck
Well I'm down on my luck

I'm hiding at Bon Jovi's
I'm a desperate man
Send lawyers, guns and money
The *#@! has hit the fan

All right
Send lawyers, guns and money
Huh!
Uh...
Send lawyers, guns and money
Uhh!
Send lawyers, guns and money
Hyah!
Send lawyers, guns and money
Ooh!
Yeah!
Yeah
Yeah...
Uh!

B.S.
the people who were in charge of protecting us in the first place messed it up so now we let them be put in charge again. Makes sense.

Sure glad we went after Ken Lay...

McCain is onboard with this debacle. Is this how he is going to reform Washington? I can't wait.

Hazel, nice try but
Bush warned Congress about these quasi entities on many occastions. These entities have been problems for YEARS. These entities are under Congressional control, not executive. The executive branch plays are role on the BAILOUT of these entities.
In 2001-2003 when Enron was on the front pages, there were accounting errors from Fannie Mae that would make Enron look like Accounting 101. Fannie Mae is Enron on STEROIDS. At that time Mr. Raines was at the helm, a Clinton appointee. Clinton is not the blame either for this problem, try LBJ and FDR. Do your homework before your Bush bashing postings.

Shaft
FDR made it possible for many Americans to buy a home, my grandparents. LBJ, maybe, misguided bowed to conservative pressure and privatized to pay down war debt. Bush with Gala Celebration and Garden shears cut up all regulations and the cons bleed the system for trillions and now gives it back.

You ever wonder what credit default swaps really are and how they apply?

Federal Bailout of companies
Michelle

Will you make sure that the two men that lead FAME and Freddie Mac do not get their golden parachutes? One of them is reported to get $19 million if he is fired without cause. I would make his performance cause and deny him anything. I would ask the AG to sue to get back past bonuses. I will be real supprised if the GOP does that since they are probably Bush have mores.

Amazing how you party pushes the free market idea until your friends get in trouble. Then the GOP socializes the hugh loses and make the tax payers foot the bill for their mistakes.

Deregulation
John Shaft the Bush and company have been pushing deregulating everything including lending industry. They have cut back on government banking inspectors and other industries. GOP want their friend to have complete control until they get in trouble and then they want the taxppayers to bail them out.

George Bush was bailed out by his Dad and friends including some of the people responsible for the Saving and Loan disaster. He then went on to do some insider trading when the company he was on the board of starting going down the tube. The profits from that insider trade is the money he used to buy into the Texas Rangers. How many Republicans are now under indicdment or serving time in jail?

Get the Word Out!
Thanks Michele for clearly explaining this financial crisis on the Chris Baker show today, 18-Sep-2008. I've been trying to understand this problem for some time, but the major media outlets present the problem in very confusing ways, and keep implying that the whole problem is solely the fault of Republican party members. Problems never happen "overnight" and it's important to explain root causes -- in this case going all the back to the Clinton administration. Please keep fighting for us taxpayers and I look forward to seeing your recap of the situation in the Mpls Tribune soon.
