It's not everyday that I find myself agreeing with the Huffington Post, but when it comes to the AIG bonuses debacle, I couldn't agree more.
"Have you noticed how, whenever there is a serious effort to put an end to business-as-usual, we are warned by insiders like Paulson and Summers that the result will be the end of civilization?

"'This lack of transparency -- and the lack of accountability that results -- is one of the most significant threats to our democracy,' Wyden told me. 'This is not at all how the civics books tell us the system is suppose to work. What we have here is a prime example of Washington deny, defer, delay.'

"He's right. We deserve better. Let's make this D.C. mystery the cause celebre it deserves to be. Let's demand that the White House live up to its vows of transparency."

What has been lost in all this AIG outrage is the stark reality that this debacle is what should be expected when government moves into the Board Room.  Congress passed the misguided $700-billion bailout in October; Congress approved the second tranche of $350 billion for the bailout in January; and Speaker Pelosi and President Obama pushed through a “stimulus” package that specifically permitted these AIG bonuses on the taxpayer dime.  When Congress and the Administration took these actions they set in motion this necessity that they feign outrage over misuse of hard-working taxpayers’ money.

Congress must engage the same determination they used this week to enact an exit strategy for the American people from bailout-band-aid mania.  The American people deserve our outrage about more than just these $165 million.

It's all about
the smoke and mirrors and returning to "business as usual!" Now the liars are posturing and threatening special taxes, what a joke! Who were the highest recipients of AIG money? Now they are finger-pointing and the liars in Congress are scrambling to divorce themselves from this debacle! Now the American taxpayer has to "repent in leisure" because these liars got caught!
vonryansexpress writes: Friday, March, 20, 2009 1:29 PM
I viewed you Ms. Bachmann
on the floor of the House in a colloquy with Rep. Ryan, I believe, wherein you postulated that these funds, (TARP's,Stimulus, etc), where they were not spent or lost could be "reeled in."

I encourage you to continue the mantra of 'reeling in' both the appropriated and the anticipated spending.

'Reel in' can become an operative battle cry for all Americans and certainly for those of you on our side of the aisle as you stand the barricade against the herd of carnivors attacking the nation's soundness ... not unlike Will Smith in the last scene of "I am legend."
Riders on the Storm writes: Friday, March, 20, 2009 1:38 PM
When Obama says
he was shocked about the AIG bonuses, there are only two possibilities: either he is lying or he is so incompetent as to not know what his Democrat-controlled Congress is doing.
kappo writes: Friday, March, 20, 2009 2:06 PM
IF RESPONSIBLE, WHY DID U APPROVE BILL?
Obama we know why you belatedly claim to be responsible for the AIGs 'bonus' bucket of worms. Because you hope irate Americans will let it pass, as they usually do when you utter your golden words Ha! His worshippers forgive their King anything! However, those of us with a mind of our own, who can see thru the holes in Obamas smokescreen, have had enough of the devious false spin, gift of gab words he has mastered.
Does the Presidents hollow words " I am respon-sible" while true he is, will that poor judgment be held against him? So far he has been able to talk his way out of every serious blunder, with hardly a murmur from his dependent pushovers!
Did he neglect to read the bill and/or did he
early on accept the bonus issue. Apparently both!
kappo writes: Friday, March, 20, 2009 2:37 PM
Yes, Dems pass the buck, in hot seat!!
The record is clear, Democratic leaders, includ-ing the Rookie President, approved the bonus issue and past the undeserved bill, after all they were obligated after being bought! Self-serving politicians feather their nest, tough luck for the vulnerable tax payer! Of course, both partys do. However, conservative Reps., for the most part would have tried to avoid paying a defunct AIG Bonus money and would have eliminated it, if they held the power! That is obvious. Just compare, who are the big spenders?
Yes, Bush wasted our tax dollars on a war that wasn't necessary but along with the spoiled rich, for 6 of his 8 years, our economy was doing ok for all of us. Now, in just two months, the bottom has fallen out, under the naive, inexperienced leadership of the Novice President. I can't say 'our' Pres., because he isn't mine until he proves worthy to be!

Language warning, but other than that, it's a decent read about just how screwed up this entire situation is.

And a lack of transparency is intentional. Criminals and vermin prefer darkness.

liar'liar pants on fire,O didn't know,Ha
No doubt the Presidents deaf, dumb & blind fans will believe the gift of gab words of their beloved King, regarding the bonus. His "I knew nothing" defense leaves one to ponder is he on top of his game or just giving lip service, a great President impersonator, ill prepared with an empty mind! Time will surely tell. Its already clear for informed, independent minds! Will the USA survive Obamas leadership of the free world, while he's in training on the job?! How smart/safe is that?

I'll bet there are some really
angry executives on Wall Street and in the banking industry. They are probably all saying: "Damn it, but I hate a politician who won't STAY bought!"
Monkeywrench writes: Friday, March, 20, 2009 4:33 PM
Blame Bachmann!

The American people should be outraged at the nonsense that comes out of Bachmann's mouth. How can Bachmann blame anyone but herself? She sits on the House Financial Services Committee, and she knew nothing about this stuff in the stimulus bill? Why didn't she read the bill? She seems to have plenty of time to appear on Fox Noise or Larry King's show, but never enough time to attend committee hearings or read the bills she votes on or meet with constituents. But you yahoos at Clownhall don't care. That's because Clownhall clowns swallow--they don't spit!

Pres. Obama needs to clean house
Summers and Geithner are not the best choices at this point. Eliot Spitzer or Paul Krugman would do a good job. But considering the HUGE mess Bush and the GOP landed us in, the Obama administration is doing what it can to stem the flow of this disaster. Even the far left can't blame him for the task he has inherited from Republican recklessness and greed.

Smoke and mirrors, you say? I think you're right - and look no further than the Bush administration and the Republicans who helped promote the greedfest on Wall Street! You and your ilk are preetttty 'outraged' NOW, but we didn't hear too much from you righties when the crooks of the Bush era were stealing us blind in the light of day. Frankly, the cake hole you opine from could use some significant blocking and we'd all be the better for it.

Of course it must be Bush's fault that Obama signed a bill that he never read. It is Bush's fault that the administration made Dodd change the wording in the amendment. Oh yes and it is Bush's fault that Obama has a bunch of tax cheats and lobbyist working for him. You had better start facing reality you guys are not going to get away with using the Bush thing much longer. George Bush will look like he was really fiscally responsible when you see the debt that this teleprompter president will run up.
Raelei writes: Friday, March, 20, 2009 4:56 PM
Diane, you're right
It IS Bush's fault. Period.
Dose of Reality writes: Friday, March, 20, 2009 5:15 PM
Typical
Bill Clinton made a big speach after he was elected and said he would have the most ethical administration in US history. How many people to jail, died, committed suicide and got impeached?

Something about liberals and trying to convince people they are right and just. Barry-O set the bar for himself and has already fallen short of his promises...the administration of lobbyists and tax cheats will never be truthful or "transparent" whatever the hell that buzz word means....But hey, it made all the liberals FEEL good and gave Chris Matthews a shiver up his leg...

"How many people to jail, died, committed suicide and got impeached?"

None. The only guy who was impeached is still alive and didn't go to jail.

Assuming you meant "or" rather than "and," in what way is dying unethical? Or even committing suicide? It's even possible to go to jail while being ethical, or to be impeached without being found guilty.

"Barry-O set the bar for himself and has already fallen short of his promises."

Ah, but a man's reach should exceed his grasp, or what's a heaven for?

BAILOUT THE CREATION OF LEECHES
DERIVATIVES are what are used in hedge funds the driving force at the helm of the financial meltdown.

People most of the companies in the bailout are a form of a Madoff scheme for certain.

ENRON USED DERIVATIVES as well but coupled them with DUMMY CORP.

what are DERIVATIVES---a type of risky gamble an insurance (whom cannot be called insurance otherwise they would have to be regulated by those in the insurance industry) so, they call them VEHICLES OR BETS which are sold to investment firms and they re-sell them. the bet says that when a company FAILS they will be paid back--then they sell these insurance type BETS to companies.
Only in these BETS there the risky companies. when these irresponsible investment firms buy them NEVER CHECKING/NEVER CARING WHETHER they are a good investment for them then the IRRESPONSIBLE COMPANY try to re-sell them. Only the GOOD INVESTMENT firms seeing they are no good---the GOOD INVESTMENT firms refuse to buy them. Then the IRRESPONSIBLE investment firm is forced to sell all their OTHER good stock investments until all the IRRESPONSIBLE INVESTMENT firms have left in their companies are a hug compile of BAD DERIVATIVES at which time the IRRESPONSIBLE COMPANY is bankrupt and WASH DC SLUGS KNOWING THIS decided to tie a noose around the public neck by the name of bailout which will cause a NEVER ENDING STREAM OF MONEY out of the USA to the creators of these bad debts.
gwen  writes: Saturday, March, 21, 2009 1:44 PM
DERIVATIVES - HIDDEN LEECHES IN BAILOUT
the problem with these BETS that are used in HEDGE FUNDS is that these IRRESPONSIBLE USA INVESTMENT FIRMS buy these BETS why??

A. firms are either TOO STUPID AND DON'T CHECK ON WHAT THEY ARE INVESTING IN, or
B. OR DON'T CARE THEY WILL JUST TAKE THE UNSUSPECTING PUBLICS bailout MONEY AND RUN
C. OR, these companies DO KNOW and DON'T CARE because they figure when the USA IS BANKRUPT it will wipe out all small/mid business sectors leaving 1 or 2 or several of the engorged companies in the marketplace gravytrained for life partying hearty while the small/med business sectors and publics livliehoods bites the dust forever. Because the BAILOUT creates a NEVERENDING MONEYDRAIN OF PUBLIC FUNDS out of USA to the creators of these BETS (many of whom hate the USA. stop the bailout people to ALL COMPANIES.

however,Thomas Jefferson pretty well covered much about our situation today in two quotes made by him over 200 years ago. Our founders fathers feared what we are living today:

1. "If a nation expects to be ignorant and free, in a state of civilization, it expects what never was and never will be."

2. "I predict future happiness for Americans if they can prevent the government from wasting the labors of the people under the pretense of taking care of them."

His Socialist plan is transparent
Obviously something Mr. Obama hasn't considered...again, since he's never ever worked for a living, it is therefore logical that the entire thought has eluded him. The statement below is of course why the Soviet Union finally collapsed. Oh...but the price paid by the millions who had to endure, during and after "The Great Marxist Experiment" was being conducted, is too large to fathom! Marx of course never worked in his entire life either..thrown out of every country he ever lived in, because he was just an "agitating unemployed moron". He just had a lot of ideas of how it was supposed to work, in "A Perfect World". Can anyone see the parrell here with the idiot who now runs this country?

Time to fight back
I looked up at the sky and saw the light was gone; I looked at the flag and saw that it was down; I looked at the fields and saw they were arid;
I looked and saw that the land was a desert, with all the cities destroyed.
I saw that a fruitful and beautiful land
full of great people built on a great dream had been destroyed by the those who preferred to clothe themselves in purple, shading their eyes with make up,
beautifying themselves with trinkets,
their pay for selling their fellow men, women and children into slavery.
And I felt angry.
I went out and look there was no one on the street.
There were no children to be seen,
no young people anywhere,
no birds in the sky.
And I said, today is the day.
I will not rest until I have destroyed the people who have done this.
I resolved nothing would stop me.
I would never turn back, not for snow, not fire, not hail, not thunder.
I would not stop not here on earth and not in the next world, if there is one,
until I found those people and make them pay for this injustice, for this greed and cruelty.
And look, there was a light, the sun appeared,
I swear, the sun broke through the black, black clouds, and I walked on.
I walked into the next street and ten men and women joined me.
We walked into the next street and 100 more men and women joined us
and so we went on and on knowing there could be no more delay
the wolves were in among the sheep tearing them to pieces
and by the time we reached the end of the town
1000 people were walking with me
and we were all ready, ready to put fight with whatever we had.
We walked on and look, a million people had joined us.
And God was on with us, always, with every step of the way.
