It is my understanding the oil shale processing requires an enormous amount of energy to process, which translates into massive amounts of green house gases. I'm a proud member of the the half of minnesota voters that is between the democrats and the republicans in the political spectrum that have virtually no representation in congress. Even liberals and moderates alike understand the threat of global warming. Do republicans (and bachman) still think global warming is a myth? Oil from shale makes no sense to me for that reason. I'm still not convinced republicans have finally gotten a clue about that issue. |

For all you liberals that think there is an alternative to oil that is viable and feasible and can make a short term difference put it on the table. Reality is there is none. Ethanol takes more energy to produce than it yields plus it is driving up the price of corn.
Plus Pelosi was talking about wanting Bush to release some of the strategic oil reserves. Why would she do that if more oil would not lower prices?
Why I am a proponent of alternative energy sources none of them can make a short term difference of significance. And betting our future on something that has yet to be invented is ludicrous. make gas 6 bucks a gallon for all i care. This is exactly the national sacrifice we should have been making after 9/11. the day after the attacks Bush should have gone on TV and announced a 3 dollar a gallon tax, raising the price to about 4.50. In the ensuing 7 years we would have had the finanical incentive to change our ways and make massive investment in alternative energy and electric cars.

Obviously, you have no idea of how many jobs are related and affected by the price of oil and fuel. Name an energy source and you'll have plenty opposed to it no matter what it is. Imagine millions of Californians plugging in their hybrids when they get home from work. They would long for the days of brown outs. Besides, how can anyone expect every American household to have a hybrid, and how long does anyone think it would take to change out everyones vehicles. We now have clean burning diesels, so I'm sure technology could do the same for gas engines. Getting away from fossil fuel is practically impossible. Take oil out of the picture and every other energy source would skyrocket too. We've got more problems ahead.

-Though reserves are going down now it is more due to refineries using oil bought at $100 a barrel than buy new oil at $145
-the dollar has decreased only 5% since March, yet oil is up 35%
-There is no shortage of oil right now anywhere in the world
-Does not mean there might not be, but this is nothing new
-What is new is how oil trading is unregulated in the last 8 years
-Amaranth cornered the market on heating oil after Phil Gramms enron loophole went through earlier this decade
-they went bankrupt but only after wreaking $8 billion dollars of damage and causing countless others to go bankrupt
