One year ago today, Congress smartly allowed the ban on off-shore drilling to expire. After months of urging Congress to take every action at its disposal to increase the supply of American-made energy, I was thrilled to celebrate Energy Independence Day 2008.

However, one year later, we have made no progress.  First, the Obama Administration put an abrupt halt to plans already in place to open up the outer continental shelf and public lands in Utah to energy exploration.  And, Interior Secretary Ken Salazar has announced it could be 2012 before the administration even decides whether it will consider moving forward.

Washington is not only not making progress; it is, in fact, sending us further from achieving energy independence than even before.

Instead of increasing the supply of American made energy, Congress is pushing a national energy tax, Cap and Trade, that would increase the cost of energy and kill jobs.  In fact, a study by the George C. Marshall Institute, which reviewed a wide range of studies and analyses of the cap and trade legislation, found that the price of energy paid by the American consumer would jump:  5-15% for electricity, 12-50% for natural gas, and 9-145% for gasoline.  The White House’s own numbers show that cap and trade would cost the average American family an additional $1761.

The American people shouldn’t have to wait for another summer of $4-gas for the Administration and the majority in Congress to do the right thing.  Energy independence is a matter of fiscal prudence and national security.  And, an all-of-the-above energy strategy – which includes exploration of off-shore oil and natural gas and shale oil deposits in the Mountain West – is the way to achieve real energy independence.

A preview of things to come
regarding the Crap and Tax plan of the leftist dominated government in Washington.

My electric bill came today. The newsletter is devoted to the proposed legislation in Congress and how it will impact our electric power costs.

According to my cooperative power company, the cost of electricity will increase by 25% by the year 2025 based on the current formula contained in H.R. 2454.

My electric cooperative, in the Minneapolis metro area, is owned by the people it serves. Our government used to be owned by the people and we sent people to Washington to serve us. Our current government is owned by the leftist leaning democrats who do not serve us but insist on dictating to the people.

Obama is a menace to our freedom and liberty.

The electricity for my West Virginia farm is supplied by one of FDR's Rural Electrification Associations. The association supplies power at a very reasonable rate, but is always doing upgrades, so we never get a rebate. That's OK too, because lots of storms in the area, which means lots of work restoring electricity. It is an excellent association. Commercial power companies in nearby counties supply power at a MUCH higher cost.

Received the monthly newsletter in July. The president (elected office) of the association estimated the cost of our power would increase at least repeat at least thirteen hundred dollars more per year if cap and trade is placed into effect. He was terribly upset. I've known the president all my life (think he is a distant cousin) and he is not a person who rattles easily. Folks will not be able to afford that. We are carrying a goodly number of folks who cannot pay right now.

Figures I've heard for the power company that supplies my home in Florida boggles my mind -- around 2K more per year increase!

One of the few bright spots
in this economy has been relatively low gas prices. This could change, very quickly, though. The pipe dream of "alternative" fuels just over the horizon is putting this country in an undue position, because we have huge reserves of untapped oil. American oil, oil that would allow us to be free from these 7th century Islamic regimes. Big Enviro, has such a strangle hold on this country, that they put every man, woman and child at risk. These eco-nuts, prefer a minnow, to humans in the San Joaquin Valley, of California! And believe that once mankind is gone, then their Mother Earth can be free and pristine, again! These people are lunatics, and they are very, very dangerous. How long must the American people be held hostage to these environmental communists? Which group is nuttier, the nuts in Big Enviro, or the nuts in Islam? Tough choice, isn't it!

Moving along
We're no closer to energy independence because that's no longer the buzz word. Last summer that was THE story before the financial markets melted down in Sept. This summer it was health care. Politicians spend most of thier time with bullet points presentations rather than long term solutions. Energy will be the topic when the price of gas reaches $4/gallon.

Spontaneous fool of asshat & Val ley g
The Irony of all the issues we have around the world is that we depend on other peoples Drilling.

So, please offer a solution. Let me help you two;

Solar and Wind; Great...for every 6 dollars in Petro energy we produce, we are currently generating a few cents of enrgy to match or a little over 1% of electical needs. Do you comprehend how that even if you double that every few years, it'll be a looooong time before it makes a dent. Of course we have pie-in-the-sky mandates to get to ridiculus levels in the meanwhile.

Nucular (pun intended for asshat). Obama's words, "we'll look into it". Meanwhile Dems close down Yucca Mtn. And the fact the Gen2 Nuc stations are very safe goes way over their heads.

Our own Oil and Gas; Drill baby is some kind of stupid joke to you. But its the only short term way to get off overseas induglement.

But please, offer up some good debate points to find a way out of dependence besides 'asshat' and 'semi-mentally challenged' talking points.

Michelle, why don't you know about putting clean nuclear energy on the fast track?

On March 16, 2009, Harry Reid and Orin Hatch introduced the "Thorium Energy Independence and Security Act 2009” – to appropriate funds for thorium research and education both in the US and abroad. 8 days later the the US Navy to investigate the use of thorium-based nuclear reactors for naval use.
The Obama admihnistration has signed "Agreements to Advance Developments in Nuclear Energy"
with numerous countries, as well as all domestic nuclear energy research labs, as well as funding targeted research.

Only One Problem With Thorium
Despite the claims of Thorium Power, no one has produced a commercially successful thorium reactor.

Even in India, where they are actively pursuing nuclear power their first big breeder reactor will use uranium not thorium. The process is one of those pipe dreams like solar and wind power. It will never be commercially successful unless some genius figures out a completely new reactor configuration.

Betting on a long shot like this is stupid when there is abundant gas and oil reserves that lie untapped.

Apollo..its happening fast
The head of India's Atomic Energy Commission announced on 9/15/09 that a special version of the forthcoming Advanced Heavy Water Reactor (AHWR) adapted to use low-enriched uranium (LEU) fuel.
The design is intended for overseas sales, and the AEC says that "the reactor is manageable with modest industrial infrastructure within the reach of developing countries."
the announcement reaffirms India's commitment to proceeding with the thorium fuel cycle using the original AHWR as the final stage.
A prototype 500 MWe fast neutron reactor being built at Kalpakkam should be complete in 2011.
The First Thorium Energy Alliance Conference is being held October 19-20, 2009
Washington, DC, USA

So lets revisit in a couple of weeks.

A chunk of the stimulus money is going to this.
The US itself has enough easily-extractable thorium to power its reactors for thousands of years.

The Omnibus Appropriations Act of 2009 provides $145 million for such research and development (R&D). As described in the President Obama's 2010 budget request, the DoE's fuel cycle R&D's focus is on "long-term, science-based R&D of technologies with the potential to produce beneficial changes to the manner in which the nuclear fuel cycle and nuclear waste is managed."

The US Navy has been directed to investigate the use of thorium-based nuclear reactors for naval use.

75% of all the world's crude reserves are under the control of nations not always “friendly” to the US. Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Iran, Libya, Nigeria,

A majority of it comes from Canada and Mexico. Although we don't have a much reserves as Saudi and Iran, we really don't know how much we have because you really don't know until you put a straw in the ground and find out. Wouldn't it be nice to at least know.

the electric companies refuse to pay the cap and trade charges. Just flat out refuse. What's the government going to do, shut them down? Like to see the states seize Federal tax payments as they're taken from citizens paychecks and hold them in accounts to pay for unfunded mandates. Like to see the states tell the Feds to go eff themselves and start doing their own drilling. What's the government going to do, arrest the country?
