At a time when our President is telling us that "we all have to make sacrifices" given the economic hardships, Washington continues to carry on with its misplaced priorities.  Instead of pursuing commonsense legislation to right our economic ship, Congress is pursuing its recklessly irresponsible spending habits.

After a two week recess, Congress returns today, and among the pieces of legislation we will be taking up this evening are:

H.Res. 254 - Recognizing the designation of March 2009 as Irish American Heritage Month (Yes, it is April -- it's not a typo, but I guess Democrat leadership couldn't find the time to fit that one in last month. At least it doesn't cost anything.)

H.R. 388 - Crane Conservation Act of 2009

H.R. 411 - Great Cats and Rare Canids Act of 2009

With regard to the last two, last year I posted on identical legislation passed last Congress, but I guess we still haven't learned our lesson.

The Crane Conservation Act would establish a new grant program to provide money to individuals or groups that work to conserve crane species in Africa, Asia, Europe, or North America. A noble goal, but one that will cost tax payers $25 million over 5 years and focuses largely on overseas programs. Similarly, the Great Cats and Rare Canids Act expands government with your money by creating new grant programs authorizing $25 million over five years to fund rare cat and dog conservation in foreign countries.

With our economy in the condition that it's in, Congress’ time could certainly be better spent than on $50-million legislation like this.

Spending
Thanks for the heads up Michele. The spending has got to stop. Even in good times this is over and above anything constitutional! So tired of all of this.

Here in the 7th Congressional District we are behind you and will be supporting you next year! Keep up the good work.

Let's cut your earmarks first, ok, Michelle?

Well, there goes...
the $52 million the DHS is saving by buying their office supplies in bulk.

Michelle's earmarks
Perhaps all should read what Michelle's earmarks are for. Most seem quite sensible. The ones that she has listed here are not.

Demonstrating the problem
When we've been inundated with talk of "billions of dollars" and moving on up to "trillions of dollars", seeing a program to spend $25 million over five years seems almost irrelevant. Dividing $25 million by 300 million people gives you a per capita cost of about 8.3 cents for the program. For the recipients of the money, it can mean the good life for five years; for the rest of us it means not finding the nickle and three pennies in our couch.

And so we have the conundrum of a small but motivated minority leeching off of a large and apathetic majority. It's worth the recipient's time and effort to lobby for the program, because it means a gain of $25 million. It's not worth our time to research and oppose this program, as it's only costing us 8 cents. When this program is duplicated thousands of times, however, we find that we really do care about our 8 cents....

Divided on the Issue
I am divided on this issue. I do see that the Big Cats and Rare Canids Act of 2009 is a worthwhile scientific undertaking, and $50 million does not seem like an exorbitant amount to spend on a program like this. On the other hand, I will also say that I hope that this money does not get diverted into the hands of corrupt politicians and game officials in other nations (which seems likely), some of whom benefit from the poaching of their nation's wildlife!

Sorry, I meant to say "$25 million dollars does not seem like an exorbitant amount to spend on a program like this."

"Perhaps all should read what Michelle's earmarks are for. Most seem quite sensible."

So earmarks are OK if some people think they're "sensible?" Isn't that a bit squishy? How would you apply such a vague standard?

This is rich. Congress has a bill to spend 50 million for rare cranes and cats in foreign countries and can't approve anything for poor kids in our country's capital city.

And the CBC doesn't protest this? What a bunch of freaking hippocrits!!

All the government does is spend money. it is how they spend the money. Looking at the earmarks listed for Michelle they appear to be valid projects. How valid are some of the others. Let say the 30 million for the marsh mouse. You guys think that Obama is wonderful if he spends money on infrastructure, I agree infrastructure is a valid expendature. These other spending follies are not. The 50 million that Michelle sites in this article certainly will not help our country. It will not fix a road or a bridge and it will not put some of the people who are out of work to work. It is interesting that when a republican asks for money it is a waste but when your guys spend on ridiculous projects all is fine. I liken this to me spending money on a vacation rather than pay my mortgage or buying food for my family.

When will liberals understand that the our government should not be in the business of financing every feel good project around the world. If they did not take so much money from its citizens then citizens would have more to donate to cranes and cats. Instead the take my dollar, skim off $.50 for govt. bureaucracy, and give $.50 to cranes...when I could have given the whole dollar to them myself IF I CHOSE. With the "IF I CHOSE" being another important factor liberals want to forget as they think only they are smart enough to make the decisions for everyone else.

Socialistic Spending
This administration will spend money on those pork issues and items that will get their fellow Party members re-elected. They care NOTHING about the people or they would be smart enough to know how to correct this economy.

In just under 100 days, this administration has turned a thriving economy into a Banana Republic.
