Given our pattern of bailouts and spending measures over the past several months, it comes as no surprise that our national debt has surpassed $11 trillion, the largest it has ever been in our nation's history.

Hopefully, this absolutely enormous number will temper President Obama's plans to continue his government spend-a-thon. But from what we've been hearing from the White House and among Democrat leaders here in Congress, it appears that we should just buckle in for more business as usual.

In fact, one of President Obama's top legislative priorities seems to be passing a "cap-and-trade" – or cap-and-tax, as I call it – policy for America that makes businesses and energy producers pay to emit carbon emissions.

Originally, the President estimated that this plan would cost $646 billion over eight years to implement. However, Jason Furman, Deputy Director for President Obama’s National Economic Council, recently stated that it could cost up to 3 times that amount - bringing the cost closer to $2 trillion.

Republicans are rightfully wary of a measure of this magnitude, particularly one that will surely mean higher costs for every American - the last thing we need when our country is in a recession. What makes this plan even more mind boggling is how much it will hurt American businesses while their competitors in countries will not be beholden to anything similar.  American businesses will be inclined to move their operations overseas to take advantage of less expensive operating costs.

Last week, I posted on how cap-and-tax legislation will affect every single American through increased costs for everything from groceries to school supplies, not to mention their energy bills. Remember the hit our wallets took last summer with $4 gasoline? If this legislation takes effect, those days will soon be returning.

The financial burden being placed on the shoulders of every taxpayer and on future generations as a result of these reckless spending strategies must be replaced with fiscal responsibility.  The spending spree has to stop.

are you kidding
its very apparent THE ONE has never even balanced his own check book by the way he's spending money. "Just print more.." If that's the approach, you may as well just cut a check to the american people and let them do with it what they want.

Spending
I listened to someone on the radio, sorry did not get the name, that made a lot of sense regarding some of these energy policies that Obama has put forward. He said that it would not be unthinkable that within the next two years that it could cost us as much as a $1,000. per month just to heat an 800 sq. foot house. Please tell me how the majority of the American public could afford this. The $13 dollars a week sure won't cover it and then there will be the added expenses of all of the goods that we need to purchase. Taxes will be raised on things like your telephone, your cable, etc. Of course then placed like Walmart will be unionized so of course their prices on everything will go up so that the union bosses can get their share. People had better start protesting and do it in earnest. This man is out of control.

Not to worry
Nice to hear all you conservatives getting upset about the deficit, which ballooned under Reagan and Bush. Don't worry: we'll just cut taxes and it will all go away.

Debt
The damage has been done in a record 60 days give or take a few days! We are in debt forever. Our children, their children and their children's children are in debt forever. Our country is quickly marching through socialism on its way to communism/marxism.

Most people don't have time after working a long day, commuting and trying to survive to analyze things like the AIG mess. They foolishly trusted their elected congressmen and senators who lied to them and were just plain incompetent. WE OWN AIG! Our elected officials bought it. There is so mush baloney out there just to confuse and distract that it is no wonder everyone is in the dark.

We are in a very dangerous mess and moving away from a democracy in leaps and bounds. GOD help us all.

-The U.S. Congress outspent Ronald Reagan’s proposed budget every year he was in office, save 1984. The national deficit was approx. 2.6% of the U.S. GNP when Reagan entered office, and only 2.8% of the GNP when he left. Yeah, we will be begging for the numbers Ronald Reagan produced after 4 years of the tax cheats and lobbyists...

"An $11 Trillion Debt!"

Of course if it weren't for Bush, that figure would be $6 trillion.

I got a dose
"The U.S. Congress outspent Ronald Reagan’s proposed budget every year he was in office, save 1984. The national deficit was approx. 2.6% of the U.S. GNP when Reagan entered office, and only 2.8% of the GNP when he left."

Thanks for that. If Reagan had balanced the budget, the Republicans would have introduced a constitutional amendment to have him declared king, or emperor, or both. When Clinton balanced the budget, well, he doesn't get credit for that.

Meanwhile, Bob M. may be alluding to the fact that Obama did increase the deficit by quite a bit: by adding the costs of our overseas wars, which the Bush adminstration managed to keep "off the books."

regardless of your simplistic and naive ratioalizations, we are in debt way over our heads and your man is at the helm. The asylum is being run by the inmates -- and you are sitting in the game room playing checkers.

Get real!

We were in debt way over our heads long before Obama was elected. At least my man is trying to do something about it.
