The Obama Administration is certainly having its say when it comes to the U.S. auto industry.

For instance, what kind of cars should we drive?  The Administration is announcing plans to increase the fuel efficiency of cars by 2016 to 35.5 mpg. The current CAFE standard is 27.5 mpg for cars and 24 mpg for light trucks. Current law already requires a 35 mpg standard by 2020.  But, given the Administration’s dominance in the auto board room these days, why not move the deadline up 4 years?

Automakers are strapped as it is when it comes to manufacturing and car sales, and this new standard will increase the strain on these manufacturers to meet requirements four years sooner. Furthermore, the AP reports that new fuel and emission standards for cars and trucks will increase the costs to consumers of about $1,300 per vehicle by 2016.

Seeing as how standards were already in place to meet these fuel efficiency standards by 2020, it's interesting that the President would choose to hit the wallets of already struggling Americans yet again to advance his environmental agenda.

The President's intercession has essentially made him CEO of the American automobile industry. In fact, his Auto Task Force has called for the elimination of more than 3,000 Chrysler and General Motors automotive dealerships which would subsequently put over 150,000 employees out of work.

Arbitrarily, dealerships across the country are receiving notice that no matter how profitable they may be, they’ll be closing their doors by government fiat.  These closings will not fix the litany of problems facing the automotive sector nor make it viable once again, yet the President has chosen to destroy small businesses, hurting families and worsening the recession for communities all over America.

Given that nowhere in the U.S. Constitution is the President given the power to make such demands on businesses, the President should reconsider this plan. The government takeover of the automotive industry is unprecedented and unacceptable, and it’s families and small businesses who will bear the weight of this misguided policy.

VW makes a darn fine car w/unions
The reason that gas prices went up during the 70'S is that the producing nations decided that they deserved the money instead of sending it west corporations. The main reason for this is that most of those countries have nothing else beside their resources to help develop their countries. Unless poverty is your preferred method of payment for the non western nations resources. With the western history of exploiting developing nations and installing corrupt governments friendly to western corporations, they had a good idea. We have don't have right to insist on political slavery in return for cheap energy. This is a reflection of the real world cost and impact of energy. So setting standard for the auto companies is a great way to improve the environment and incorporate new technology. I guess being a republican means being anti-future technologies and their positive impacts on our lives. The decline of the US starts with us loosing the technology edge.the reason I would buy a Honda is because I would get the best car for future and buying a US car maker is buying the best car from yesteryear. It is sad to see the workers paying for the mistakes of the company leaders.

Hostile Take Over
If this was Exxon, Walmart or Microsoft forcefully taking over a company like Chrysler it'd be seen as bullying or, as alluded, a hostile take over. At what point do you receive training for taking over an industry in your duties as a community organizer? One thing that's good about this is that we'll have a benchmark- Obama's mistake here is that he's only socializing one car company. The rest are still in a choke hold by the UAWU, but they've still managed to put out decent products. This will destroy Chrysler and illustrate, Barracrocrats cannot run private industry. The sad thing is that Chrysler has put out some awesome vehicles. This company was the legacy of a handful of individuals and the Obama presidency has stomped all over their graves with this rubbish.

No, that's not the game at all. The game is that GM will become a government corporation employing government employees making government vehicles! As with the Zils of the Soviet era, party apparatchiki, I mean, elected government officials will be given GM limousines, while the military will drive GM personnel carriers and tanks, the post office will bump along rural routes in GM vans, and rank and file bureaucrats will be given the equivalent of Chevy Vegas for their personal use.

The rest of us will be taxed to pay for all these vehicles, and any cars we don't buy from GM will have all sorts of "fees" and "certificates" added to their stickers, but we will be free not to buy products from US-GM if we choose not to and can afford the excise charges for failing to patronize Baraky Motors.

Obama is not seasoned enough for anything. The men who drafted the Constitution lived during an era where adult male life expectancy, after discounting for high childhood death rates, was in the mid 50s. Thus they articulated a minimum age for the presidency which encompassed the final third of the average man's life - that small window when he is no longer ruled by testosterone and has accummulated a vast trove of life experience and wisdom.

Of the three presidents in the past century or so that we have elected who had not reached their 50th birthday, TR was too impetuous by half, JFK got is into a murderous bloody war that cost hundreds of thousands of lives, and now little Obama, still enthralled to "mentors" like the despicable Saul Alinsky is too inexperienced and wet behind the ears to understand that collectivism and socialistm never work outside the nests and mounds of ants and termites.

I believe Obama is offending his own. Washington is full of those who do whatever they need to do to survive. Some of the grandious plans Obama has forced through will not sit well with the folks back home for some of these politicians. I doubt too many politicians will get a warm reception at home once all realize that 100% will get a tax increase. They will quickly throw Obama to the wolves for self preservation. Obama is not seasoned enough with Washington politics to realize just how vicious things can get.

It's fascist, without the Holocaust complications.

Fascism is when government controls the production capabilities of an economy though the individual companies putatively remain in private ownership.

In socialism, the state outright owns all the companies.

This is a mix of the two: fascist/socialist.

Fortunately, our nation's capital is full of bull elephants of both parties who are becoming weary already with little Dumbo. They don't care about his legions of young adoring fans, or how cute he looks in his little clown outfits.

They are about protecting turf and this little pipsqueak is upsetting the natural order of things in Washington. Little Dumbo's biggest headaches are going to come from the bulls in his own party who will slap him upside the head soon enough. Already he is angering them with his blatant overstepping and his infinite arrogance. as Already there is a disaffected core of centrist Democrats who are no more eager than we are to see this great nation go the way of Ceaucescu's Romania or Honnecker's East Germany, which is exactly where it is headed while junior's Saul Alinsky paradise begins to take form around them.

Good ole Obambi...

Obambi, through imperial fiat, imposed the new CAFE standards on car manufacturers. New fleet standards have to meet 35mpg by 2016, up 50% from current levels.

Of course, he's now the new car czar, as the Gov is now the majority owner. As boss, I guess he can do that.

Some problems I see: why didn't he just mandate 100mpg? If 35's good, 100's better, right? How about 1000mpg? How about Warp Drives? Why not?

Experts say the only way to even come close to meeting that mandate is to make cars much smaller and lighter, and development and implementation will still add somewhere between $600 - $1300 to the price of each car.

Obambi counters that three years of driving such a car will offset the higher price through fuel cost savings. But since we're not drilling here and now, and not building new refineries, and I'm sure he'll want to add new gas taxes... that doesn't compute at all.

Which brings us to the real problem: who's going to want to buy a cupholder-sized car made out of tinfoil that costs as much as a Porsche?

Seems to me the automakers are gonna be in bankruptcy all over again.

I watched as the 60's people espoused free sex and big mouths, and thought they would grow up.
I watched as Carter replaced Ford and saw how pleased the country was, for a while, until 16% inflation hit us. Carter proved to be a weak, weak leader afraid of Iran and we couldn't get him out of office fast enough.
I am afraid Obama is another Carter and his foolish recipes for our beloved country will lead us to "Carterland".
While many of our enemies are growing stronger, due to oil and energy, we sit and allow our oil to remain in the ground while Obama puts on huge taxes with silly cap and trade policies and the media watches without comment.

Of course I will need to leave a few hours early each time I have to go out as I can't possibly leave the cord in the garage when I leave so I will have to role it up and bring it back up to my apartment. I haven't quite figured out yet how I will close my front door with the extension cord in the way. I guess I will work that out. Oh life will be so much better as soon as I can get that electric car. He also has been thinking that since the stimulus has not worked so well he will institute a new plan to create jobs. He will change the name of the United States to Obama Land. There will be lots of new jobs changing signs, stationary, money, etc.. Anything that has United States printed on it will need to be changed. During the thirty years my husband worked for the federal government in the Washington DC area there was indeed a mandate for carpooling: if workers expected to park in the parking garage, they HAD to have a 4-person carpool, otherwise they didn't get admitted to the parking garage. So they did. This was enforced. And workers who drove themselves (for example a regular carpooler who had to have his own car that day because of some necessary errand at lunchtime or after work) found his own street parking, which usually was the greater part of a mile from the office, in rain or snow or whatever.

Your objection seems to be that people who must carpool will be inconvenienced. They may be. It's a trade-off. But our attitude of automotive entitlement has contributed to the Middle East having us by the neck, and freedom from that is surely worth something.

Ah starman, I am older than just about everybody so I keep forgetting that many adults walking around today don't remember all that I remember. Back in the 1950's we heard endless ridicule of small cars---a "real American" was supposed to drive something half a block long with big fins. This was the era when Southern segregationist politicians made fun of "eggheads". Meanwhile, the eggheads were driving the first VW bugs. Hmmm. Interesting. Because within a couple of decades, Americans (including non-eggheads) couldn't buy small, efficient Japanese cars fast enough. We all learned new words like "Toyota" and "Mitsubishi". And then, in the fullness of time, Detroit went "splat" like apiece of roadkill.

The American attitude of entitlement has allowed us all a glorious spree. But sprees have consequences: if you pig out on desserts, you may gain weight, develop health problems. If you spend money wildly, you may get into financial trouble. Sprees have consequences, and the remedy is to correct for their excesses. Rachel is right. No, you are flat wrong. There are plenty of Fords and Chevy cars in Europe. The Europeans have a public transport system countrywide that beats the shitt out of fuel efficient cars and it's so small that many ride bikes, buses to work- or for anything. The US has many cities not laid out for that, which IS why we have to drive.
I lived there and travel there once a year...there are more fords that you would ever imagine. Get a freaking clue.

And as the euroweenies drive small distances and in the city, mostly, it is practical for them to drive those little smart cars. They won't necessarily get killed driving 15-20 mph, as opposed to our driving huge distances and higher speeds.

There you go again Geno!

"Again, your ignorance of science is showing. The amount of CO2 being added if far beyond what the plants need. In fact, increased CO2 makes plants less nutritious."
________________________________________________

The EPA gives new meaning to the term "bad breath", because all
humans and animals exhale carbon dioxide as product of respiration of oxygen.

All scientists know CO2 is as essential to life as oxygen and water.

Carbon dioxide is omnipresent and absolutely essential to plant growth. In growing, plants breathe in carbon dioxide, use the carbon portion to build their structure (biomass), and exhale oxygen and water vapor. In turn, animals breathe in oxygen and breathe out carbon dioxide, and carbon dioxide's "circle of life" continues.

There's no doubt that carbon dioxide levels are higher in our atmosphere now than in the pre-Industrial Era. But despite a run-up in atmospheric CO2 content since the Industrial Revolution (after 1700 A.D.), CO2 and greenhouse gases other than water vapor still only make up less than 0.03 percent of the total atmosphere.

M- "Let's say that your premise is absolutely fictional. Correction of your statement should read, Let's say that the vast majority of far left environmentalist scientists got it TOTALLY wrong about global warming and CO2 is harmless."

Me- Actually, it's the concensus of the world scientific community that CO2 contributes to global warming. I know you funditards have a problem with science, as it has eliminated a need for God, but it is what it is.

M- The fact is, CO2 is harmless in the context that you are presenting it. Plants need it to survive. Anyone trying to decrease CO2 is in essence trying to decrease the amount of vegetation on the planet thereby decreasing the amount of available O2 for us.

Me- Again, your ignorance of science is showing. The amount of CO2 being added if far beyond what the plants need. In fact, increased CO2 makes plants less nutritious.

M- As far as the rest of your statement, I have no problem with decreasing the amount of fossil fuels that we import into this country as long as we are allowed to drill where we need to in order to keep up supply. We also need to build more nuclear power plants so we can reduce the need even more.

Me- Again, Drilling only delays the inevitable. Eventually, we WILL run out of petroleum. There's only a finite amount of it. We need to get better efficiency and eventually find a way to replace it altogether.

Let's talk about another aspect. The reason Chrysler and GM are in such trouble today is because they can't compete with Nissan and Toyota and Volkswagen. Why? Because THOSE companies had the forsight to make more fuel efficient cars. Go overseas, you will never see a Chevy or a Ford, but you'll see plenty of Toyotas and VWs.

Small Cars
Just wait until you see the real impact of these small cars. I bought one of those small cars back in the early 70's. I had what should have been a fender bender and the car was trashed. Insurance premiums will go through the roof. Also the taxes that the governement and the states collect from gas will have to come from somewhere. Do I see some new taxes coming. Now I drive my nice big Mercedes S class and will do so until the wheels fall off. These little cars are death traps.

Gov't Motors and Chrysalis won't survive two years under the yoke of obama.

The market simply won't allow it. No one wants a government car. The speed with which these two companies disappear will take your breath away.

Toyota and Honda will gladly take the lots vacated by the closed U.S. dealerships and will be well positioned for the recovery.

The US auto industry will sadly miss it and will never regain lost market share.

The bell tolls for thee, uaw.

Michelle,

Does BO have any legal authority to require Autos to meet emission Standards?

Is a constitutional challenge possible?

Regardless, the US Auto industry is in real trouble. Very few people will purpose the kind of cars that BO will require them to make.

Of course, this will require BO to continue to fund the Auto companies for as far as the eye can see - does AMTRAK come to mind?

The federal govt. will buy these cars
We experienced this in Kenya. When the government takes over an industry, the produce or product of that company gets all the govt. contracts.

GM will now sell cars for all government agency needs i.e. police cars, and any other government agencies that need 'company cars' will have to buy GM. This way, the government creates an unfair competitive edge for the unions that own GM to give the impression that the profits of GM are market driven. This economic news becomes a framework and example of why sometimes 'only government can help' with economic crisis.

What the average american won't understand is that GM's profits will be paid for by tax dollars so we are recycling our money. Bail GM out then buy their products because their products can't make a profit in a free market. Give government a basis to argue for further government control/ownership of big companies that find themselves 'stressed'. This is why we needed the stress test on banks. Soon all private institutions will be subject to stress tests.

In Kenya we called this 'fuata nyayo' - follow in the footsteps.
Americans welcome to Obamanation where we all follow in his footsteps wherever they may lead. And after he is done ruling us for 8 years, Michelle the other Obama will rule us for another 8 years. After 16 years, Malik will be old enough to marry a guy who can be president. The Obama nation is just beginning.

Obama: "We, the American people, will now have an unprecedented opportunity to buy the new car of the future. It requires NO FOSSIL FUELS and runs strictly on water (and a liitle vegetation).
I give you.........THE MOTORIZED CAMEL!!! (ya know....keepin' with his Muslim roots). The "sporty" version has only one hump, while the "family" version sports two. Optional air freshener available (and suggested)."

The problem with your logic is that the foreign car companies are ALREADY extentions of their respective governments.

Heck, Volkswagon was started by Adolf Hitler (It literally translates as "People's Car") as a company that would produce a car for the common man (Volk). After the war, the new West German government invested heavily in VW and it became a symbol of German resurgence. Meanwhile our own government gave the Germans a lot of leeway in importing them in the 1960's (Hense, they became what the Yugo tried to be in the 1980's).

The Japanese companies had a transition from the old "Zaibatsu" corporations to allied supported plants to being subsidized by the Japanese government. You conservative (you aren't anything of the sort, BTW) complain the UAW insists on pension and health care programs for workers, but in Japan and Germany, the government covers those. No wonder they are more competitive.

What Sci-Fi could never imagine
This whole government take-over of the auto industry is really starting to look like a badly made Sci-Fi movie -- You know the one where EVIL corporations have taken over the world, enslaving the masses, and creating a totalitarian state with the CEOs in charge.

The old sci-fi stories assumed corporations would grow so large that they would overwhelm the government, making us all slaves to the wishes and desires of cruel taskmasters, eliminating our democracy in favor of a capital-ocracy.

But, the Sci-fi guys never imagined that the corporate state would come about not by the out-of-control growth by companies. They thought government would be the victim of the corporate state.

However, instead of that reality what we have now is the birth of a Corporate State created by the out-of-control growth and the abuse of power by the GOVERNMENT. Imagine how Ray Bradbury and Issac Asimov must feel now.

A real Car solution
Mandate all cars sold in the US being Flex-fuel;

~About a million dollars to certify a motor.
~About $100 per car added cost.

Then there would be a market for alternative fuels. Iso fuels are under $1/gallon. You only get half the mileage, but gas is almost back to $3/gal. So it makes sense.

Wait, scratch that idea. It makes sense.

Oh wait, Chevy came up with the VOLT, and they only lose $2500 per car. And we are okay with children mining metals for the battery in the Congo so long as we all get off oil?

Its all about the union people and nothing more.
