A month into the 111th Congress, we've seen no signs of the “change” and “reform” to Washington promised by the Democrats last fall. Starting with a restrictive rules package meant to silence the House minority, the heavy-handed partisan talk continues.  For instance, President Obama made some strong remarks last night while before the House Democrats at their retreat in Williamsburg, VA.

According to Washington's DC Examiner newspaper:

"President Obama used some of his toughest partisan rhetoric yet... Accusing Republicans of engaging in 'phony arguments and petty politics,' Obama escalated the tone of his pushback against Republican complaints about the size and direction of the stimulus package."

Yahoo news reported today that:

"Obama... dismissed Republican attacks against the massive spending in the stimulus.

“‘What do you think a stimulus is?' Obama asked incredulously. 'It’s spending — that's the whole point! Seriously.'”

Maybe the Republicans’ problem is that this is simply a really bad piece of legislation.

Perhaps the spending that the President calls "essential" and "stimulating" is simply spending for the sake of spending.  Perhaps this bill pays little more than lip service to funding for transportation and infrastructure projects that will really put people to work. Maybe the bill is simply too bloated with pork barrel projects that will do nothing to put our economy on the track to greater prosperity.

The tone from the other side of the aisle is akin to:  There's a crisis facing our nation; something big needs to be done to fix it and this is THE solution. If you disagree or have a different solution, you are wrong and don't really care about fixing the problem and helping our nation.

Check out this link to see a list of examples of the wasteful spending provisions contained in this "stimulus" bill. While some of these projects may be worthy and deserve attention, they should be addressed separately and not lumped into a package that is strictly supposed to help the economy and put people to work.

What happens?
This is what happens when you first elect marxists who are quickly heading towards communism into office. Their first goal is stop any further elections. First they destroy democracy by silencing the opposition, i.e. talk radio and any other media which disagrees with them. Then they indoctrinate children at an early age. Taking over completely is the last stage, i.e. Reid saying we don't need the Republican votes to do whatever we wish; Pelosi pushing the "Pork Bill" through without Republicans. The Republicans are being pushed out and are becoming irrelevant and should be fighting this trend tooth and nail. Are they? Will they? Who knows?

Is it possible...
I know we are only a few weeks in, but could Obama become the second president ever to not be re-elected by his own party (the first was Franklin Pierce). Hillary is sounding good to a lot of democrats.

Republicans should keep saying no - the country is moving to their side...

FYI my Fellow TH'ers
Phone lines all across DC are busy, busy, busy!

Just tried calling the 4 vulernable Republicans, Snowe, Collins, Voinovich and Specters offices, all lines are busy.

Olympia Snowe (ME) 202-224-5344
Susan Collins (ME) 202-224-2523
Voinovich (OH) 202-224-3353
Specter (PA) 202-224-4254

I guess Americans are rising up and saying NO. Let's just hope the powers that be listen to us for a change.

Here's to hoping (I am really starting to hate that word lately!)

been there...done that...
Despite the $500 billion spent under FDR through various programs, the unemployment rate in the United States did not significantly decrease until after the U.S. officially entered World War II in 1941.

According the Bureau of Labor Statistics, from 1929-1944, the rates of unemployment in the United States were as follows:

1929 ... 3.2%
1930 ... 8.7%
1931 ... 15.9%
1932 ... 23.6%
1933 ... 24.9%
1934 ... 21.7%
1935 ... 20.1%
1936 ... 16.9%
1937 ... 14.3%
1938 ... 19.0%
1939 ... 17.2%
1940 ... 14.6%
1941 ... 9.9%
1942 ... 4.7%
1943 ... 1.9%
1944 ... 1.2%

how can anyone vote for this bill?...history has shown this sort of "stimulus" doesn't work...notice the amount FDR's admin spent ($500 billion)...this situation is so similar...we're dying out here...I'm sole support, and am losing my business that has supported us for 14 years...we need real help getting this economy back on the right track...not this (S1, HR1) proven mistake...

Is this a joke?
Obama thinks stimulus is spending and that's the whole point? Is he really such a dope? Does he really think the US government can spend its way out of this mess?

Sometimes I don't get why so many voters could elect a guy who doesn't know what he is talking about and clearly cannot lead his way out of paper bag.

The guy is in over his head and we are just beginning to see his ineptitude. If it weren't for the fact that the people will feel the effects of his ineptitude it would actually be quite entertaining to watch him screw up for the next 4 years.

You don't think that a decrease from 25% to 10% is SIGNIFICANT? You seem to be lacking in judgment.

(Remember, we didn't enter the war until December 7, 1941.)

It's NOT a Stimulus Bill
I said in this post that the bill that's about to pass the Senate isn't a stimulus bill. Here's the link to my post:

http://www.letfreedomringblog.com/?p=3668

Here's what I'm asking LFR readers to say:

This is not a jobs bill. It’s a political payoff.
This is not a jobs bill. It’s a political payoff.
This is not a jobs bill. It’s a political payoff.
This is not a jobs bill. It’s a political payoff.

LFR is the home of the most extensive stimulus writing anywhere. I've scrutinized it from more angles than I thought existed.

Stimulus Package
I recently recieved an e-mail that I think deserves merit. If you want to start the economy look at it as building a campfire. The Government has been trying to light it at the top and what happens the fire goes out, right. Lets start at the bottom, give every tax paying person $200,000.00 dollars and guess what is going to happen, people will pay taxes, get out of debt, pay off the credit cards, some will invest, but most will after they are out of debt will buy the things they need and want. So what do you think will happen when people start buying? The economy is going to rise up out of the ashes. Yes it may only be temporary, chances are it will last quite a long time. Right now people do not have the money to buy a thing, and if they do they are buying only what they need to get by. When the taxpaying people have money the economy flurishes, when they do not have money, you get the depression, this should be lessons we should have learned from long ago. The trickle down effect is a JOKE!

Change We can believe in?
Unfortunately, this Stimulus package looks like it will pass the Senate with the help of three GOP defectors that apparently want to appease the Democrats instead of their own party. This is exactly why Republicans lost the Presidency, the Congress and the Senate. Obama has been using scare tactics and apparently these three have caved in. Furthermore, this is not the greatest economic disaster since the great depression as Obama would like us all to believe. The Carter administration brought us an inflation rate of 18% unemployment of 15% and prime interest rate of 22% all within a 3 year period of taking office. Obama continues to blame the Republicans for this country's financial mess when it was the Democrats Community Reinvestment Act of 1994 that jump started it all. Bill Clinton expanded the program to include millions of people, including 5 million illegal immigrant families (according to HUD), millions of bad loans, which would never be repaid, were given out hand over fist. The banks were forced to do this in some cases and in others enticed by the promises of Freddy Mac and Fanny Mae with guarantees that the loans were backed up by the government. When the loans were sold to banks all over the world, it was a formula for economic disaster, the likes of which the world has never seen. Change we can believe in? I hardly think so.

No Earmarks huh?
Obama goes on road today and proclaims, "No Earmarks in my Stimulus Bill!" Do you believe it? Do we not fully understanding what "Earmarks" are? It's when a legislator seeks to insert a tag that directs a specified amount of money to a particular organization or project in his or her home state or district. There are tags everywhere in this stimulus package. Who is he trying to fool? Most Americans including Congresswoman Michele Bachmann understand the general idea. It is spending that is not beneficial to the American public or overall economy but serves the needs of a chosen few who are typically tied in some way to the legislator or politician who proposed them. Can we say "ACORN"? Might Obama be trying to sell his pork-laden, earmark-filled bill to the American people by simply proclaiming it is "100% free of Earmarks? Unbelievable!!

http://minnesotaindependent.com/26721/bachmanns-statements- on-stimulus-raise-a-few-eyebrows

Michelle Bachmann again proved how unintelligent she is. She says that this new stimulus bill has enough money in it to write a check to every man, woman, and child in the world for the amount of $1,430. So I got my 50 cent calculator out and divided 787 billion (amount of dollars in the stimulus bill) by 6.8 billion (amount of people currently in the world) and I came up with $115.74. I calculated it three times to make sure I was correct. I’m not sure how Michelle learned to do simple math but she really needs to go back to elementary school to get it right. We need intelligent people who can not only do simple math but can also comprehend stimulus bills far beyond our expertise in office.
