It is absolutely shocking to see what's taking place at the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

President Obama’s new Secretary, Janet Napolitano, has recently been criticized for issuing a nine-page memo prior to the nationwide “Tea Parties” last week, warning of right-wing political extremism, referring to United States citizens with "dangerous" political leanings.

An official document of the DHS  lists right-wing extremists as "groups and individuals that are dedicated to a single issue, such as opposition to abortion or immigration," and includes those "rejecting federal authority in favor of state or local authority." So, apparently, according to Homeland Security Department, the American ideal of federalism is a threat to American ideals.

In the case of the tea parties, these dangerous extremists were American citizens – Moms and Dads, Children and Grandchildren, Husbands and Wives -who were upset with how the federal government was spending their money. They were fed up with what they saw as massive and excessive government spending.  They were peaceably assembled, yet were deemed a "threat" by our federal government. This is a dangerous line of thinking and reasoning from our government leaders and a direct infringement on First Amendment rights.

We're not talking about wire-tapping calls of suspected terrorists to foreign countries to protect our nation against acts of violence like we saw on 9/11 – though the New York Times has reported that domestic wire-tapping is now at an unheard-of high level, we're talking about the government watching you, your family, your neighbor because your political views differ from those of the people in control in Washington.

Congressman Thaddeus McCotter points out in a piece with the American Spectator that despite the Department of Homeland Security having "'no specific information that domestic rightwing terrorists are currently planning acts of violence,' the memo specifically smears returning veterans and a host of other sovereign citizens who may hold conservative views; and generally smears conservatism by equating it with 'Right-wing extremism."

To me, it looks like the extremists are those running the DHS.

Right on top of things
Gee, this story is only a week old.

I know it's already entered the right wing mythology, with Bill Clinton's haircut and Obama's birth certificate, never to be dislodged...but people who know how to read are already well aware that that report does NOT smear veterans and does NOT equate conservatism with extremism.

Bachmann: "Anti-American"
Who's been calling out Obama and others for investigation for not yielding to your ideas since Bush was in office?

"Sen. Barack Obama and certain members of Congress should be investigated by the media for "being anti-American," Congresswoman Michelle Bachmann (R-MN) said."

The MOST PROVOCATIVE CONFIRMATION....
....as to BO's intent to leave the American people helplessly unprotected is: "The (9 page) Unclassified, DHS Assessment as to Rightwing Extremism"...Coordinated w/the FBI?

Naming steadfast, high quality Americans to DHS watch-list:

1) American veterans (my father, brother, husband)...and the millions of brave men/women who served/fought to keep up safe and FREE).

2) Anti-abortion Americans (all Americans who believe in and love life).

3) Anti-ILLEGAL immigration Americans (all Americans who believe in maintaining the existing law).

4) Anti-Animal cruelty Americans (all Americans who absolutely love life, even the subordinate life of vulnerable, creatures.

WHAT OTHER PRESIDENT WOULD EVER, EVER write and present such blasphemous dreck???? NONE!

"I know it's already entered the right wing mythology, with Bill Clinton's haircut and Obama's birth certificate, never to be dislodged...but people who know how to read are already well aware that that report does NOT smear veterans and does NOT equate conservatism with extremism."

Quite so. It doesn't "smear" returning veterans or equate conservatism with extremism per se. It merely *suggests* that returning veterans and conservatives should be watched as a pool of potential violent extremists.

I bet if the report had singled out Code Pink members and liberals in general as potential terrorists, you libby-lefties would be having a cow.

you may know how to read, but your facility with the language is suspect. The way I read the article, it DOES equate conservative ideas with extremism (as you do). What's the difference???

And, what part of "returning veterans" do you not understand?

Engage brain before posting please.

Per se
You're right, Marxists, it does not baldly state "Veterans are all extremists and so are conservatives." But the message, the message. And all your attempts to parse that away doesn't hide it.

And why are you so defensive of this report? You understand, don't you, that the first ones shot after the revolution are the useful idiots who helped bring it about?

"that report does NOT smear veterans and does NOT equate conservatism with extremism."

IT certainly does. It smears veterans as easily swayed into joining violent militias. All of the "extremeist" issues identified in that assessment are, coincidentally, "conservative" issues of interest.

Thousands of angry veterans, active service personnel, pro-life advocates, pro 2nd amendment advocates, and others tired of high taxes and wasteful spending will tell you so.

Imagine how you'd take it if those individuals interested in "single-issue" causes like "Green initiatives", unions, gay-issues, Palestinian statehood and anti-war protesters were identified as Left-wing extremists in a DHS Assessment. Think teachers would be upset? Arabs? All the gays? All the conservationists? You bet they would be.

Nope, it doesn't even say that either. Come on, we've been around this bush a zillion times. Do you really think that DHS is watching everybody who gets discharged from the service? Even us evil liberals don't have THAT many black helicopters.

And, what part of "returning veterans" do you not understand?"

Show me where it equates conservatism with extremism. Show me where it says returning veterans are all potential terrorists.

As a brave man once said, "Put up or shut up."

There's a concept called "inference" I think you need to learn about.

I know what this assessment says, who it implies as being an "extremeist" and who it does not. I know who is responsible for it.

Leave it to a wormy little snot like you to defend this piece of crap so passionately (and ineffectively).

and I *have* read the report. It it effectively does everything we are telling you it does.

Have you actually read it?

"Do you really think that DHS is watching everybody who gets discharged from the service?Even us evil liberals don't have THAT many black helicopters."

Duh!. *Of course* the DHS (more accurately, local law enforcement, to whom the report was sent) cannot watch all veterans and conservatives all the time. But the report clearly says, in essence, "be on the lookout."

And please address the other thing I said: do you deny that if the folks to be surveiled were liberals instead, that you guys would be having a cow?

we did not expect. We've always known the LGBT community were fascist in their beliefs. Having key members within the executive, legislative, and judicial branches is no shocker. However, since social conservatives have now been under federal protection for over ten years in the public and private sectors, this is not the time to acquiesce regardless of what the liberal media perceives as reality. The first challenge will be ENDA considering no replicable, epirical data studies support the professional LGBT community's belief that they are entitled to special treatment because they're neurotic.

"And please address the other thing I said: do you deny that if the folks to be surveiled were liberals instead, that you guys would be having a cow?"

Surely someone as well-informed as you would know that DHS already released a report on left-wing extremists, several months ago. Even if you didn't notice the report, you might try to remember ever hearing reports about liberals having cows. Ring any bells?

Nope. Liberals aren't sitting around anxiously waiting for another story (that might even be true) which makes them feel like they're being persecuted. When the government says there are left-wing extremists, liberals don't immediately flood the internet with screams that they're being watched and the government hates them, etc., etc., etc.

It is time to contact your Rep and your Senator, regarding this report and demand answers! It is time Janet Nap came before the people and explained fully and completely. Pointed questions need to be posed to her and her responses must be precise. If she is unable or incapable, the community organizer will throw her under the bus by firing her. I'm not going to get outraged by Sec. Napalitano's comments as you are...

99% of those who serve are decent men and women, no doubt about that. Then there is that 1% the never should have enlisted to start with, who are socially misanthropic, and will eventually become bad news when they leave the service because they were bad news before they joined.

Timothy McVeigh was in the military.

Jeffrey Dahmner was in the military.

Charles Whitman (the UT shooter in 1966) was in the military.

In the 11 years I was in the service, two members of my battalion were arrested of crimes and sent to prison.

What makes the military person attractive to the extremist groups is that he has a skill set they don't have. And if they look hard enough, they'll find the guy the military never should have inducted to start with.

predictions come true:

Former presidential candidate Alan Keyes has given perhaps his most dire warning yet, saying that the Obama administration is preparing to stage terror attacks, declare martial law and cancel the 2012 elections, which is why they are demonizing their political enemies as criminals and terrorists.

“It’s obvious that they will stop at nothing,” Keyes told attendees of a reception in Fort Wayne, adding, “We may wake up one day and there’s a series of terrorist attacks, the economy is paralysed….martial law will be declared everywhere in the United States and it won’t end until the crisis ends.”

Keyes said that Americans should be thankful if they even see another election in 2012, stating, “If we don’t wake up and work to see that it happens, we will not see another election.”
