Below is a letter that Alaska Governor Sarah Palin sent to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid in June urging him to pursue and pass a comprehensive energy plan for the American people. I give credit to Yid With Lid for originally posting about it back in June. It was recently reposted at Jewish Blogging.com.

I don't think you can have an elected official today better suited to discuss the pros and cons of increased energy production in Alaska than the state's Governor.

June 23, 2008
The Honorable Harry Reid
Senate Majority Leader
United States Senate
528 Hart Senate Office Building .
Washington, DC 20510
Dear Senate Majority Leader Reid:

In previous correspondence to members of Congress, I have urged the enactment of legislation to authorize development of oil and natural gas in a small portion of the coastal plain of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR). I will not repeat the arguments in favor of this legislation but will briefly focus on a few key points that have become even more evident since my last correspondence.

That letter began, "With the price of oil hovering around $100 per barrel". Now, just a few months later, the price is close to $140 per barrel, and there is no end in sight. What will it take for Congress to enact comprehensive energy policy that includes increased domestic production of oil and gas, renewable and alternative energy, and conservation? It seems to us outside of the Capitol Beltway that Virtually every effort to accomplish this is met with criticism and failure. In my opinion, the debate about energy policy is no longer theoretical and abstract. Our failure to enact an energy policy is having real consequences for every American in their daily lives and has begun to affect America's place in the world.

In the last few days, proposals have been tabled to permit oil exploration and development in the 80 percent of the federal Outer Continental Shelf (OCS) which is off limits to such activity. I strongly support oes development in Alaska and elsewhere as a necessary component of a sound energy strategy. However, it makes no sense to consider the oes and to ignore the possibility of exploration and development in highly perspective upland areas, including the coastal plain of ANWR-the most promising unexplored petroleum province in North America.

With appropriate stipulations, oil exploration and development in the OCS can be conducted in a safe manner. Uplands development can be accomplished even more safely. Advanced technologies, such as directional drilling and the re-injection of oil wastes, ensure that the footprint of development would be less than 2,000 acres (approximately one-quarter of the size of Dulles Airport).

In advocating for oil development in ANWR, I have never guaranteed that this new domestic production would immediately reduce the price of oil. However, incremental production from the coastal plain should help reduce price volatility in the U.S. Additionally, ANWR development would send a strong message to oil speculators and producing countries that the United States is serious about addressing its energy problem.

Yet, there is an even more important point. The location and quantity of oil
production are changing world geopolitics. Countries that produce significant quantities of oil and natural gas are gaining in power and prestige. Several of these countries have objectives and value systems that are antithetical to U.S. interests. We are becoming increasingly dependent on these insecure sources to our long-term detriment. Further, it has become clear that U.S. petrodollars are financing activities that are harmful to America and to our economic and military interests around the world.

Much attention has been focused on the importance of crude oil and gasoline in fueling our nation's transportation system. This need for petroleum will not end anytime soon despite efforts to develop new technologies and to diversify our transportation system into mass transit and more fuel efficient automobiles.

Meanwhile, the true significance to the nation's economy of products refined from petroleum is becoming increasingly apparent. These products undergird our entire society and economy and provide precious jobs and revenue. The soaring prices of chemicals, plastics, fertilizer, and other products - and the loss of jobs - graphically illustrate this point. We must recognize that it will be many years, if ever, before we discover alternatives to the petroleum-based products that every American uses in our daily lives.

If we don't move now to enact an energy policy that includes more oil and gas production from domestic sources, including ANWR and the federal OCS, we may look back someday and realize that we failed to perceive a critical crossroad in the history of this nation. I don't think it's overly dramatic to say that this nation's future and the quality of life for every American are dependent on the decisions you make or don't make in the next few months.

Thank you for considering my views.

Sincerely,
Sarah Palin
Governor

I couldn't agree more, and a comprehensive All-of-the-Above energy strategy is what Republicans in the House are fighting for.

These obscene attacks on Palin
will backfire on those Obama supporters who are engaging in them. Because Governor Palin does not have to win them over, but the American people. And common sense letters like the one above will do it.

did she send one to McCain too?
As soon as Palin switches parties, Maverick will start listening to her.

Go get 'em Sarah
I love her closing sentence.

I don't think it's overly dramatic to say that this nation's future and the quality of life for every American are dependent on the decisions you make or don't make in the next few months.

This was not a letter from someone who didn't understand the issues and the needs of the country. She clearly lays out her states interest in the matter all while relating it to the need of the nation.

Going back to Bill Clinton who was the first democrat to shut down ANWR he and the democratic congress have absolutely hung this country out to dry.

Give em *#@! Sarah!

Another area where Harry Reid is horribly out of touch with reality is on water resources.

His apparent solution there is to build his maglev train from Disneyland to Las Vegas so the tourists can bring their own water bottles and full bladders to his city in the sand.

Until he gets his railway, he is ramming a water grab through rural Nevada and Utah.

By the way, one of Palin's predecessors (W.J. Hinckel) looked into the economics of Alaskan water for the lower 48. We might be in for all sorts of dramatic political and technological changes with her on the national stage.

Way to go Sarah!
She's the first politician I've read about to bring up all the products we use that are made of petroleum. Let's face it, we will need petroleum for a long time to come. She's dead on with her plan. Too bad her letter probably fell on deaf ears, or should I say blind eyes.

And who is lacking "experience"?
Now compare that reasoned, fact-based letter to Obama's plan (as posted at http://my.barackobama.com/page/content/newenergy ) (my reactions following dashes):
* Provide short-term relief to American families facing pain at the pump
---Code for tax the oil companies and "give" the money to "the people" unrealistic, but at least it will create more government.
* Help create five million new jobs by strategically investing $150 billion over the next ten years to catalyze private efforts to build a clean energy future.
---Government programs, the $150 billion being paid out of the $1000 per family promised above but taken back in tax increases
* Within 10 years save more oil than we currently import from the Middle East and Venezuela combined.
---How, by substituting non-existent crop-based fuels?
* Put 1 million Plug-In Hybrid cars -- cars that can get up to 150 miles per gallon -- on the road by 2015, cars that we will work to make sure are built here in America.
---Oh, and that'll work just as well as CAFE has worked, right?
* Ensure 10 percent of our electricity comes from renewable sources by 2012, and 25 percent by 2025.
* Implement an economy-wide cap-and-trade program to reduce greenhouse gas emissions 80 percent by 2050.
---Regulate the life out of our industry (as the liberal Democrats have in the past) to make them "green". Didn't work before; they just went offshore, or closed down all together--and their tax revenue went with them, btw.

Palin: Sound, reasoned plan.
Obama: Same old silly ideas.

Choose one.

Senator Harry Reid
is another puppet of the Democratic Shadow Party and obviously will do as he is told by the leftist that now control the party. I once thought he was truly acting in what he thought was his perceived best interest of America. He must now bow to Pelosi and Obama. I have disagreed with democrats on numerous issues; friends and neighbors, but I never felt they were UN-American or being controlled or bought by socialist and far left billionaires. The democratic party was a balance for all Americans at one time, and even respected by its opponent Republican Party. I have no issue with a democratic American. I do have issue with a leadership bought and paid for by socialist that will undermine our Constitution and destroy America as we have come to know it.
Sic em Senator McCain and Governor Palin, they need to be held accountable !!!

Gov. Sarah's speech tonight
Despite the MSM's protestations, ALL of America will be watching tonight as Gov. Palin takes the stage. She is BIG news to rebuffed Hillary supporters, Barackiacs, and frustrated Conservatives like myself coming back into the Party. (sorry Contitution Party, those hand cards I bought got thrown out on Friday).

She can have a HUGE impact and has a golden opportunity to speak to all of Americans right where it counts...in the gas-tank. Remember Clinton's "It's the Econonomy, Stupid?" While speaking of a "let's drill today" energy policy, that American flag on the video board behind the podium should be replaced with a picture of the ANWR wasteland, and a comparative footprint of the area. If this happens, the election is O-V-E-R!!! It would expose the benevolent left for what they truly are...anti-capitalist Socialtists.

Don't hold back, Sarah. The REAL America loves you.

Worried.
I am probably more nervous than Sarah is for tonight.

I know it sounds petty, but in this appalling anti-journalistic world we live in, I worry that, if Sarah hits a grand slam homerun tonight, ALL the MSM will focus on is that Bristol's fiance is on the stage. Clearly it's not up to me, but if it were, I'd keep him off the stage so as not to play right into the Liberal hatchet-job media's hands.

You KNOW that's going to be the big story tomorrow no matter what happens tonight. This woman will never get her due from the media, just like McCain doesn't. Sarah could drag Bin Laden out on the stage by a noose tonight, and they would still rip her a new one tomorrow.

GREAT LETTER GOV
However, Harry is not honorable and basically wears a dog training collar which Nancy has the controller in one of her pockets. Harry doesn't take a squat without approval from Nancy P. The majority of americans want domestic drilling now and I for one want every mode of energy persued. Nancy Pelosi, president of the united states of San Fransisco, refuses to allow a vote because she knows they will pass because the people want domestic energy. VP Palin will be a true asset to McCain and this nation with the knowledge and attitude she will bring to Washington.

Wait...
No, no, this doesn't work. We can't drill our way out of this problem... we need to increase taxes on the oil companies and force technology to catch up to our needs! Because the primary reason that we don't have affordable, 150 mpg hybrid cars available to all Americans is only because someone like Obama hasn't stepped up and forced it to happen!

It's the Economy ,Stupid!
That's what got Bill Clinton in and Obama and the Dems are banking on that getting them in. If the economy is "tanked" due to high oil prices, which affects almost every part of the economy, that is grist for the Dems and they will ride that horse as far as they can. Letting Americans suffer for their political purposes? You bet! The Dems would rather see middle America suffer rather than give up that issue (economy) for their selfish political purposes.

I don't know about other states, but here in Florida the GOP meter went up rapidly the minute she was elected.

We're trying to organize a boycott of some publications (such as US Weekly, owned by Wenner Media) that have treated her so unfairly, going way below the threshold of acceptable analysis.

Palin will be an excellent vice president. And McCain will do a great job as president as well.

What happened from 2001 to 2007???

The GOP was in control of the House, Senate and White House from Jan 2001 until Jan 2007.

Why wasn't this an issue then?

Could it be that they could not use it as a campain issue so it wasn't important?

They could have opened up all the drilling areas they wanted to during those 6 years but did not. I want to know why.

I thought Palin was pro-life.
Hasn't she heard that auto accidents have plummeted with the increase in gas costs? You can couple the 1,000 fewer deaths per month with the 77,000 lives lost annually to global warming (WHO) and the health benefits from more people walking and biking. More mass transit and better vehicle fuel efficiency would reduce our fuel costs and save lives.

I realize some of you need government to do everything for you, but most of us here at TH don't need government forcing us to behave. We take responsibility for our own actions. For those of you who need government to tell you when where and how to drive, what to eat, what to think, etc, Obama promises to solve all of your problems for you. The rest of us prefer to solve our own problems.

Dear Left-Wing Nuts
The above letter represents a cogent argument to support increased oil production to support the future of our economy. Oil is used not only for energy, but in the production of a vast number of products. Moreover, our dependence on foreign oil is a national security and economic issue of monumental porportions.

That we must pursue alternative energy sources is without question, but the continued resistance to aggresively pursuing the recovery of domestic oil resources is nothing more than politics as usual from the likes of Reid and Pelosi. Obamas refusal to depart from the "part line" tells us the about the "change" we can expect from the likes of Obama and Biden.

MARIE ANTOINETTE SYNDROME!
Harry Reid and the Speaker - of the failed Democratic House - Marie Antoinette Pelosi needs to go! I mean they need to go! If they are supposed to be representing you in your area, and you don't feel they are - vote them out! They are the leaders of a "do nothing" Democratic Congress holding up legislation that should have been discussed prior to their (5) week vacation! Fortunately, there are good bipartisan men/women in the chambers today discussing the energy crisis while others in their House have gone on vacation. If these men and women are your representatives, keep them - they care about you and me and our country! Marie Antoinette did not know her people also - when she was told they did not have bread - she just said let them eat cake! All they need to do is take Nancy Pelosi put her in a period costume like that of Marie's and put her little dog in her arms and you have Marie Antoinette! Americans are having a hard time making ends meet and they are telling Congress that! But Marie Antoinette Pelosi and THE - MILLIONAIRE - PROMPTER READING - FLIM FLAM OBAMAMAN - BETTER KNOWN AS - BARACK HUSSEIn SOETORO OBAMA - wants our citizens to inflate their tires! America - we need President Elect McCain and Vice President Elect Palin to lead this nation. Together they will bring the real change and reform America needs! They have my vote in November and I, hope, they have yours too!

Palin says war, pipeline are God's will

Did you see the videos of this B-list beauty queen addressing a holy-roller church about the war in Iraq and the gas pipeline she's pushing for? She says it's "God's will" that we're fighting in Iraq, and God wants the pipeline, so she urged students to pray for it. You can't make this crap up! Great letter
Thanks for your work Michelle. I've never seen this letter before and I'm also thankful to Townhall to post it. I used to go on very liberal blogs to make my case, but found myself spending all my time correcting the liberal lunatics lies and half-truths. Got sick and tired of their incoherent arguments that eventually led to their final tiresome rebuttal strategy of "Liar, Liar, pants on fire" Though I could have been blogging with high schoolers and didn't know it.

Oil Prices
Terry, I can answer that for you. At the beginning of '07, Oil was fluctuating around $60 a barrel. Adjust for inflation and this can be considered a reasonable price, but maybe a little high. Howver, no crisis yet.
Throughout '07 until the pullback we've recently seen oil spiked above $146.50. The last type of energy crisis was experienced in Dec. 1979-Jan 1980 of a inflation adjusted price of approx $106(monthly average peak(in today's dollars).

Hope this helps
