Today, I joined my fellow Republicans on the floor of the House to continue our call for Speaker Pelosi to return Congress to work to vote on comprehensive energy reform.

Photobucket

Congress has had more than enough opportunities to consider energy legislation to cut our nation’s rising gas prices.  But, instead of acting, Speaker Pelosi and Democrat leadership ignored the cries of the American people and went on vacation.

Yesterday, I met with Lake Elmo firefighters to talk about how the energy crisis is impacting their ability to serve as first responders. And speaking with drivers yesterday filling up their cars in Stillwater, it is clear that Minnesotans are frustrated with Congress’ inaction on this issue. The high cost of gasoline is destroying local budgets and family budgets alike.

How long do the American people have to struggle before Speaker Pelosi takes notice?

Photobucket

My Republican colleagues and I will continue to work in Congress and throughout August recess to see that families all across the nation get the help they need. Supporting the Republican solution for an All-of-the Above energy strategy is critical to help Minnesotans get back on their feet.

Demand is down and oil has dropped 30 dollars (or roughly 300% more than the expected impact of offshore drilling without a drop in consumption).

The problem is solving itself through a stronger dollar and decreased demand.

End oil dependence, not foreign oil dependence. Tired of fluctuating pricing wreaking havoc on the economy? Pass real alternative energy legislation. Simply shifting a fraction of consumption from Canadian oil to US offshore oil is meaningless pandering and the opposite of real leadership. The solution to our drug problem is not homemade drugs!

It was the removal of the executive moratorium on offshore drilling that started the drop in oil prices. The projected demand was weighed against the anticipated increase in oil supplies.

#1 Issue In November Is Energy
IF the Republicans stick together and stand firm on the All Of The Above platform, this election will reap the GOP a landslide, at all levels across America in November.

Americans overwhelmingly want to begin refining and drilling MORE, right NOW. Especially since Russia has reared it's ugly head again on the world scene, America needs to be energy independent. Russia is on the move, and we don't know what country they'll feel the need to invade, and they're talking about nuking Poland. We'd better start building refineries RIGHT NOW.

Those 5 Republicans in the Gang of 10 should be ostrasized and shunned by the GOP in both houses. Nancy Pelosi should be slapped and sent home in disgrace.

When b hussein announced for the presidency he had served some 143 days in the senate. That indicates he was not at his job another 107 assuming a 50 week work schedule and two weeks vacation. That comes out to 21 weeks of paid vacation.

And congress can't understand why they have such low ratings. Used car salesmen, and amway sellers are demanding they recieve more respect and not to be listed as among the sleasiest of jobs when congress should be heading the list of most useless occupations

Why We Should Drill Here

1. $700 billion a year is sent overseas for oil. Drilling for domestic oil will greatly reduce that.

2. Saving the planet. At present, the most backward state owned oil companies are drilling for oil in very environmentally unsound ways. US extraction technology is the cleanest on the planet.

3. Prices. World prices will come down as soon as the oil fields are opened because there will be much less speculation on unsafe supplies. Think Nigerian pipeline being bombed by rebels.

4. Increased tax revenue for your pet projects.
Domestic production will keep the sales taxes, federal excise taxes, income taxes and social security taxes in the US and no contractor will be operating in a tax free overseas environment. (Used to work as one, myself.)

5. Employment opportunities. New jobs would be created, domestically. This also generates more revenue. See point 4, above.

Now, on to other considerations. Should we explore new technologies? Absolutely, and develop them as fast as we can.

Should we use alternatives and conserve more now? Absolutely.

Should we demand higher mpg on purely internal combustion engine autos, now? No, because with current technology, the only way to improve mpg is to lighten the load, thereby making cars more dangerous like the last time this was tried. BTW, that is what ushered in the SUV's with higher survivability.

Ethanol should be consigned to the dustbin of history where it belongs because it is not efficient using corn.

Four hundred pounds of corn can feed one human being for a year, although not very nutritionally.
Four hundred pounds of corn would be added to the feed to take one steer to market.
Four hundred pounds of corn can feed four pigs to market weight.
Four hundred pounds of corn can feed one hundred chickens to market weight.
Four hundred pounds of corn produces 25 gallons of ethanol.

All of this is a matter of public record.
Methusela writes: Sunday, August, 17, 2008 5:53 AM
Hard Thought
Thanks for the figures. Do you have links handy for those stats? I'd like to show people how ethanol is causing a lot of our food prices to increase and is also part of the worldwide food protests.

Assuming your figures are correct and using the figures from http://zfacts.com/p/349.html that state that 3.91 billion gallons of ethanol were produced in 2005 (surely more today), producing ethanol has caused:

156,400,000 people to go hungry for a year if all they ate was corn.
156,400,000 steers failed to go to market.
625,600,000 pigs failed to go to market.
15,640,000,000 chickens failed to go to market.

Correct my math if I'm wrong....it's late for me.

Alternative Energy
One could invent a car that ran on air and it wouldn't matter to the millions of us that are spending $300 - $400 dollars a month on fuel to drive to work.

We can't afford to replace what we are driving now.

Infrastructure
Definition:
1: the underlying foundation or basic framework (as of a system or organization)

If you drive from anywhere to anywhere in America you will most likely run across a thing called a "gas station", which shows that we have
an infrastucture in place, for oil, to be used RIGHT NOW. Where is the nationwide SOLAR or WIND POWERGRID? How many current power stations would need to be upgraded beyond thier present capacity to support millions of electric cars, that we'd plug in overnight in our garages.
I'm all for private industry & our gov doing research and development into all the different "eco friendly" possibilities for the future. And I'm all for step-by-step changes in how things operate that ALL Americans can actually afford in thier lives. But the bottom line is: creating intirely new infrastructure(s) for alternative energy that's usable by all (or most) Americans will take FAR longer than increasing the capability of our present infrastructure(oil). I'm weary of hearing the stupid rationalle that we wont see the results of drilling today for another 5 years. How long will it take to create a new and completely different infrastructure coast-to-coast? 20, 40, 60 years?

Oil? YES!
Nuclear? YES!
Coal? YES!
Wind? YES!
Solar? YES!
Hydro? Yes!
Anything that produces more than it consumes?
Absolutely!

Cars wear out; it's an obvious truism that almost half of the cars on the road today are more than half-way through their operational life.

A great many people are going to buy new cars in the immediate future; if they all buy air-cars, the demand for gasoline will IMMEDIATELY go down and it will become cheaper, saving YOU money. This will continue until all the gas-cars have been replaced by air-cars -- including yours -- and we can use the remaining petroleum for things like cosmetics.

"How many current power stations would need to be upgraded beyond thier present capacity to support millions of electric cars, that we'd plug in overnight in our garages."

None. The power grid has vastly more capacity than it needs most of the time. By coincidence, the few times that it nears that full capacity are sunny days in the summer, when photovoltaics are at their best, so a few square meters of solar cells on most people's and business's roofs could insure that the demand never exceeds the grid's capacity.

"Where is the nationwide SOLAR or WIND POWERGRID?"

It's those long, thin things running from pole to pole along the roads. Did you think that wind energy is distributed by pipes with air blowing through them, or solar by fiber optics?

The immediate answer is that it frees up oil and gasoline for them to use.

In the longer run, we can put the trailers from those Big Rigs on railroad flatcars and haul them with electric engines. Jets and ships are a problem, but there are actually plug-in electric light planes for sale, and at attractive prices. There's also a 400 ft container sailboat being tested. Gas motorcycles can be replaced by electric scooters, of course.
