I read an interesting article today in The Hill newspaper. It turns out that the U.S. Government has lost $86.5 billion of the money they put towards last October's Wall Street bailout in the stock market.

To give you some background on this, last fall in exchange for a sizable cash injection to struggling financial companies, the government received preferred stock from companies that received funding as part of the Capital Purchase Program. The rationale was that as a company began to turn around their financial situation as a result of the funding, their stock price would increase and the government would reap the benefits. However, according to a report conducted by the nonpartisan research think thank Ethisphere, a different picture is taking shape.

"The worst performer for the government was U.S. Bancorp; the U.S. lost $3.7 billion in the preferred stock that company gave it in exchange for an injection of $6.6 billion through the Capital Purchase Program (CPP). That’s a loss of 56.1 percent, according to Ethisphere.

"On a relative basis, the government’s preferred stock in Huntington Bancshares lost 81.5 percent, or $1.1 billion. Stock in Webster Financial Corp. has lost 76.1 percent."

And, The Hill notes that these calculations only run through February 13th.  “Since then, the government has probably done a bit worse, as the Dow Jones Industrial fell 297 points on Tuesday….”

If Congress is going to play the Market with your money, I thought you should know how your portfolio is doing.

Is there no end to Pres. Bush's mess?
Not only have billions gone missing in Iraq - presumably to those no-bid contractors tied to the Bush White House for 'reconstruction' that never happened - but now we must face more billions being swallowed up by a black hole of unaccountability. This is disgraceful, and I applaud Ms. Bachmann for stepping forward and shining the light of ineptitude on her Party and the former administration's culpability in bringing down our economy.

Funny, you used the same exact, word for word, sentence about Bush on another thread yesterday. Please update your talkin points.

Raelei - quit lying
A couple of days ago you accused the military of losing $125 billion in Iraq. That was a flat out lie. At that time I asked you to cite evidence that the contractors were "tied" to the White House...please provide evidence.

And when you have done that answer the following:

1. What contractors are operating independently of the US governemnt in Iraq? You know, those guys that just went over there and somehow carried out reconstruction work with absolutley no ties to the US administration.

2. Who do you work for?

3. Who was in the majority in Congress when this was done?

Obviously you spend your whole day every day desperately trying to be the first to post (at great tedious length and irrelevance) on every thread so you can attempt to shape the discussion (SOP for seminar posters) so answering those questions should only take you a couple of seconds.

We are waiting.....but one expects the answer will include the words "the last 8 years" and probably some rant about Tom Delay or something equally irrelevant. You are a joke.

Seminar posters - I love 'em, just couldn't eat a whole one. Shall we take bets on what topic she will whine about next that has zero relevance to the topic in hand?

I say "she" - I think her real name is Harry.

That right! The above thread I was talking about is the one you called her out on. Let's see if you get reply this time. But I whouldn't hold my breath.

It helps to read the link
From the Hill story:

"Ethisphere calculated the government’s losses by looking at the stocks the government received in exchange for money companies received through the CPP. It also subtracted the interest payments it estimated those banks have paid the government. Stefan Linssen, managing editor of Ethisphere magazine, said the think tank put together the statistics to shine a light on the ethical behavior of companies taking part in the Troubled Asset Relief Program. The magazine publishes a list of the world’s most ethical companies. "Clearly, some of these banks aren’t operating ethically,” Linssen said. At the same time, he said he hopes people take note of those banks that have made money since the government’s investment."

Rep. Bachmann's comment? "If Congress is going to play the Market with your money, I thought you should know how your portfolio is doing."

1. Congress is not "playing the market."

2. The Republicans seemed to think that "playing the market" with Social Security dollars was a great idea. Guess some of them have changed their minds.

I think you are a flaming idiot! Every time you open your mouth, something incredibly stupid comes out. Do you practice being dumb or is all this coming out naturally. How in the world did you get to be a Congress woman. I wouldn't vote for you to be the milkman. The best thing you can do for yourself and the knuckleheads that voted for you is bow out of your position and go stick your head in the ground just like the other dumb birds!

Bachman is not trustworthy
I saw a news clip today of Bachman where she made a statement that $5B was going to Acorn and that Acorn was under Federal indictment. This is an outright lie. You can fact check the Stimulus Bill, go to http://frwebgate.access.gpo.gov/cgi-bin/getdoc.cgi?dbname= 111_cong_bills&docid=f:h1enr.pdf

Run your query for Acorn and it cannot be found in the bill.

And Acorn is not under Federal indictment.

Are you daft? It's called a stimulus bill and it does nothing of the sort. Do you really think that ACORN was supposed to be named outright?

Dear God,
Why did you not make us all equal in brain power?

Nee, they did make every equal, it's
just that in order to be a leftist, you have to get a lobotomy so that you can recite the mantra with a straight face.

What part don't you understand?
"Do you really think that ACORN was supposed to be named outright?"

Bachmann said ACORN was going to receive money and that they were under indictment. Neither of those is true. Bachmann lied. End of story

BACHMANN WAS RIGHT!!!!!!
The interview in question occured BEFORE the Final Passage of the Stimulus Bill Occured! Her comments were reflective of the House Version that Passed!

The House Version contained 5 BILLION for organizations like ACORN......and allowed for them to compete for those dollars....(the bill that passed allows for 2 Billion)

Liberals........Stop taking your talking points from MSNBC....Remember, Keith Olberman is not your Savior.........OBAMA IS!!!!

milk man or Obama?
Maurice are you so angry because its hard to admit that your vote for Obama was a gigantic mistake? With that kind of voting record, I am not surprised that feel the need to attack Ms Bachman. Barbra is providing FACTS. It is extremely apparent that you are absolutely incapable of sorting out what is true versus what is false.

For you Obamaniacs attacking Rep. Bachmann, Massachusetts would gladly send you Bailout Barney Frank, Ted kennedy and John F. Kerry. All I've heard from Congresswoman is the truth. Wish she were Senator or Congresswoman in my state.
