Nancy Pelosi’s letter to President Bush calling for the release of crude oil from the nation’s Strategic Petroleum Reserve proves that Democrats finally recognize that increased supplies will help bring gas costs down. But that’s where the good news ends.

If we release our emergency reserves, we are putting America at serious risk in exchange for a very short term and limited solution. The reserve is kept for national emergencies and if we diminish our supplies and are then attacked or hit with a serious natural disaster like a Hurricane Katrina, the effects will be catastrophic.  Is selling off these reserves worth the gamble to our national security? To me, it’s simply irresponsible.

If supply does indeed matter as Speaker Pelosi suggests and as Republicans have been saying, then why not lift the bans on offshore drilling, start drilling in the Alaskan Energy Slope, and start exploring our oil shale reserves?

If we want to increase supply, we are sitting on the answer.

Strategic Oil Reserves
So typical of Speaker Pelosi and all Democrats for that matter, to call for any solution but the one that will solve the problem, drilling for domestic oil.

It would be a huge mistake at this critical time in the Middle East to use our strategic oil reserves. Between the escalation in the saber rattling from both Israel and Iran and the volatility in the oil market from the consequences of any conflict between these two nations, depleting our strategic reserves could prove fatal.

When you factor in the risk we face because we daily import significant amounts of our requirements for oil from this region, we are both over a barrel and sitting ducks.

The fact that congress ignores the reality that oil imports could be shut off in an instant and at any time is frightening enough. When you add to that, the fact that we could be totally independent from any requirement from the Middle East by tapping our own abundant reserves, but are prevented from doing so by that same congress, tempers should be at a peak.

When our government plays politics with our personal lives, our livelihoods and our national security, purely for personal political advantage, it is time for them to go.

In the words of George W Bush when speaking at ground zero just after 9/11; just as the terrorists would hear from all of us soon, so too will congress hear from all of us and the sooner the better. Speaker Pelosi would be a perfect place to start.

Keep all options on the table, Michele..
Hasn't that been the Republican mantra as of late? So, why take the SPR option off the table. Newt Gingrich believes this option would have the dual effect of not only increasing supply in the market, but of also undercutting the oil speculators' upward pressure on the price, thus causing a quick drop in the market price that might discourage some future speculation.

I agree, it is pretty hypocritical of Pelosi to want to release some SPR oil but not drill, but that is what we expect from the other side of the aisle.

Just announcing that we will start drilling offshore or in ANWR will pop the speculation bubble. Experts predict a drop of $30-40 per barrel within a week of such an announcement.

Another benefit you have not considered is that American companies are the cleanest drilling companies in the world. With sky-rocketing prices, third-world nations are trying to drill as much as they can with far less consideration for the environment.

If we increase our supply of "environmentally sensitive" extracted oil we will lower the price and remove the incentive for environmentally insensitive producers to drill.

I'm all for renewable/alternative energy solutions. but these are not ready for prime-time yet. Let's do the American people a favor by increasing the oil supply.

There will still be plenty of money flowing into research on next generation technologies. When those alternatives are ready we will be ready to use them.

If you are lucky, new technologies may begin replacing oil within 10-15 years. Then we can scale back oil production.

But to bring short-mid range relief to oil consumers world-wide let's drill here, drill now, pay less.

Yes it will take a few years, but it is better to start than to sit on your hands and do nothing. Alernative energy right now is pie in the sky, and isn't paying its way. Down the road, maybe. Solar only gives 15% efficiency, wind even less and the lefties are starting to dislike it! so for now we are left with 1) Oil, 2) Coal, 3) Natural Gas, 4) Nuclear 5) Shanks Mares... Any chance a Republican of any note (Pres., McCain,McConnell) could say in a public forum "Thank goodness the Democratic leadership finally understands that supply is connected to price. Now maybe they will take the next logical step and see that just as more supply today will mean lower prices at the pump, more supply in 5-10 years will mean lower oil FUTURES, i.e. lower the speculative price."

Think of this, you own a grocery store and it is the only store in lets say a 50 mile radius. You have high prices because the city will not zone for another grocery store. So therefore, you have no serious competition.

However one day the city changes their position and allows for a CostCo or a Cub to come into your region. Will you keep your prices high, even thought it may take a year maybe two to get the the Cub or CostCo up and running, or will you lower your prices to try to build a customer base?

The same thing goes with oil prices. Granted we may not see the oil immediately, but the impact of our government finally allowing for the oil will drastically affect the market.

I am not even a busines person but I can clearly see the logic here. Get off your political high horse. You complain about Bush...dont forget that Bush has a 29% approval rating, congress, run by your Demoncrats have a 9% approval rating.

First off. Kimberly. Good to here you're out there keeping us laughing. Your BHS is showing.

Anyway, two things:

1. Drilling will take 5 to 10 years to come to market and bring the prices down.

2. Speculators are driving up the market by buying oil at todays prices 5 years in advance.

Do the math: If they drill now the speculators won't be pouring money into the market hence cutting the price per barrel and lowering gas prices at the pump. I know, run-on sentence. Anyway, it would have an almost immediate effect.

Nancy Pelosi did not even know the price of gas when she was interviewed by Larry King in April. (She commented it was 2.50, when it was 3.50) It is common sense that oil will drop if we announce that we will start drilling. She doesn't want to do anything that will be positive for the economy before the election. If oil drops and we are winning in Iraq, the dems have no talking points! are we certain it will take 5 to 10 years to get at our own oil supply. I would think if we all were on board and worked at it - it could be much sooner than that. In any case - just getting the word out that the USA - yes the USA -is very serious about using our own resources - we intend to stock our own cupboards with our own product - just making that commitment - will send a message that might result in somewhat lower prices. With the oil companies having the authority to send our nation's resources to the global markets for financial gains, we the people have little ability in getting this price gouging under control. Government control has limited use, but I believe this is one particular area we need to exercise our power. If the American people were to take control of our resources and not treat oil as a consumer product and more as the source of life that it truly is for our country, then we could return to the drivers seat of our own future. To be clear, I do not mean to place the control of our oil into the hands of our representatives, but place directly into the hands of the people. Let the American people decide what to do with their own American property. Since their is no longer any trust toward the elected official, I say lets make all important issues ballot issues. In reality, it took 60 days. Why the big time difference? 1.) Government agreed to streamline the red-tape. 2.) There were financial incentives for the companies if the reconstruction came in ahead of schedule.

Our free market could easily produce all the energy we need, if the government would get out of the way.

economics
The amazing thing about searching for information is that everywhere that I looked was opinion oriented. There wasn't any economic insight. Even the engineering blogs that I checked out were "I don't think that" or "how can it not happen" type comments. Does anyone know how the economy actually works?

I'm not sure why so many think they have to help the economy, as if capitalism left to itself would fail. Come on, does anyone really believe that? Price has a purpose; the purpose of a rising price is to reduce demand and increase supply. With rising gas prices you don't have to help me decide to drive my civic to Albuquerque instead of my Volvo; I decided all by myself based on price.

If we artificially prevent supply from increasing then price will rise at an increased pace than it otherwise would. Why do so few get this? I'm not going to say drilling will reduce price but I think that it's pretty certain that the price will be lower if we add to the supply than if we don't. That's how it works.

Economics? Perhaps we need a better word
Afraid the science of economics sometimes appears more of an art than a science. The problem is that there are far too many working parts. While supply and demand equals price is one of the most fundamental aspects of microeconomics, it can still be perverted in the short-term through various methods. While on the macro level, there is a large quantity of factors that could either thwart or save us from governmental interference. In the purest sense, I believe governmental interference should be our last option instead of a preferred one. All too often, 'experts' think they can fix things. That's what Congress believes they are here for. I think it is arguable Congress has fixed anything for taxpayers. Congress has been very effective in fixing themselves up real nicely.

Energy solutions from a 9% Congress
If any one would like to check the Bubba released oil from the strategic reserve in 2000. This was when oil first made a move up in price. It was as you would expect, throwing a few hundred thousand dollars at a multimillion dollar problem. It had a very small effect for a very short period of time. We may need the strategic reserve according to an article by Steve Milloy after the 9% approved congress passed the “ Economic Security Act of 2007” and Bush signed it. Section 526 of the bill states in plain languages that it bars the federal government from purchasing fuels whose life-cycle greenhouse gas emissions are greater than those fuels produced from conventional petroleum sources (drilling). Waxman D-CA and Davis R-VA already are already using this to demand the Department of Defense make an accounting of, and not use oil from Canadian oil shale or coal to liquid technology ( coal to liquid performance test in our aircraft has been great). You better not even think about the possible 800 billion barrels of oil shale in this county, the 9% congress does not even need the “Economic Security Act” to handle that problem, last year they put a moratorium on all oil shale development on federal lands in the spending bill. With the Department of Defense being the single largest buyer of light cruse in the world that means using drilled oil and with the our current laws that restricts domestic drilling, that says imported oil. Well that leaves our good friends OPEC and the Russians and every other foreign producer to suck up the dollars and come to our aid for any National Security Crises we may encounter in the future. I am certain that Chavez would open up the spigot for our planes to fly. Why is no one in the media talking about this?

It would be better if we could instead elect conservative Republicans across the nation. What I have seen nominated, however, are all the McCain sort; they are only conservative the day before the election. And the Republican voters know it, so they won't vote for them. The result is >95 percent of Democrats returned, and probably 75% Republicans. And that is for two reasons; one, the Republican party learned nothing in 2006, and two, conservatives are so fed up that they have given up trying.

That is while we still have a small surplus of electricity to brew a pot of coffee!! Don't you realize that not only cars run on oil, but darn near every thing we have and enjoy around us has some dirivitive of an oil by product in it.

Jeez - Louise I learned these things in my 7th and 8th years of jr. high school. Oh that's right I forget - schools really don't teach anything more than "to the test" these days - they are toooo busy doing the work of the local unions to pay attention to the real job at hand.
