Today, the Democrats are bringing to the floor their supposed “drilling” bill. The Drill Responsibly in Leased Land (DRILL) bill was pushed through committee yesterday where Democrats voted down every pro-production amendment offered by Republicans.

This bill essentially does 3 things that the Democrats want to use to mislead the American people into thinking they support increasing domestic energy production.

SHAM 1
It once again brings back the “Use it or Lose it” idea that was defeated a few weeks back by a bipartisan coalition because of its worthlessness. The 68 million acres that the Democrats say are in need of “use” are, in fact, being used. They are in some stage of exploration right now but are caught up in a bureaucratic maze of approval. As far as the “lose it” portion of the proposal, energy companies are already required to utilize acquired leases within a five to ten year period or the Interior Department Secretary has the right to revoke the lease.

SHAM 2
It says we can’t export oil from Alaska. Not a bad idea, but the problem is we haven’t
done that for the past 10 years.

SHAM 3

It “opens up” land to drilling in Alaska. While they’re on the right track, if they really
cared about opening up land for drilling, they’d do so in ANWR and not in the National Petroleum Reserve-Alaska (NPRA) that has (1) already been open for 25 years, (2) is 250 miles away from the nearest pipeline, and (3) isn’t all that serviceable in that it only has 53 workable days a year of thaw.

Conversely, ANWR is close to the Trans-Alaskan pipeline that is already in service. More importantly, ANWR has more production potential on a much smaller piece of land. If the Democrats’ key fear about drilling is the damage it causes to the environment, what sense does it make to use a much bigger piece of land for a substantially smaller return?

Democrats know the vast majority of the American people want to drill here, drill now, and pay less – but this bill will not hide 30 years of shutting off access.

This bill is more of the Democrats’ same failed policies. It’s simply cover for doing nothing to produce energy and it’s the Democrat Leadership’s excuse for blocking votes on real oil and gas production.

Just yesterday, at a Financial Services Committee hearing, Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke stated “…a 1 percent increase in supply could lower prices by 10 percent.”

Enough smoke and mirrors. If the Democrats want to drill in Alaska, ANWR is sitting there waiting.

If she did write it she may not want to admit it. "It says we can’t export oil from Alaska." Uh, export oil from Alaska to where, Michelle, to what foreign country? Presumably you meant "transport oil from Alaska to the lower 48."

Does Bachmann write these posts?

Surely you jest! Bachmann doesn't even pick out her own dresses. Her pray-away-the-gay hubby does that for her. She has her taxpayer-paid staffers that she changes like underwear write this drivel--or should I say rewrite it from GOP talking points.

As for Bachmann's assessment of the Democrats' proposal, she would certainly be the expert on smoke and mirrors. That's what her career has been built on.

Are you interested in reducing prices??
This energy bill probably isn't everything you want. But the Democrats are not about to let you "Drill here, drill there, drill everywhere." So why wouldn't you support a bill that works to lower gas prices?

Probably because you're not interested in gas prices. You're interested in attacking Democrats.

Oil Price change
Last Tuesday, Pres. Bush talked about opening our off-shores to drilling. He even recended the executive order from Pres. GH Bush, his father.

Kimberly, know what happen? The oil price change was the biggest down in one week ever.

Can you continue to believe those loaded statistics that say any drilling would only move the price by 75 cents?

Just talking about it moved the price 11% down. What do you suppose actually drilling will do?

The world markets move by future preception. If American looks like it wants to solve this problem and not expect others to fulfill our needs, the preception is the supply will meet the demand, which brings the oil price down, not congress, not gouging investigations, not only conservation, and not rushing underdeveloped alternative energy.

"Use it or Loose it" Analogy
I just heard a good analogy for the "Use it or Loose it" Bill.

The analogy is as if the government leased to farmers farmland in the desert. Then, congress say "Use it or loose it".

After reading this article, I can go further with this.

After the farmers put in an irrigation system at their great expense and the local government will not give them permits to pump out the water, then the congress say "Use it or Loose it".

Then, congress feels like superman. The congress appears as protecting the county, punishing the bad boy oil companies, and giving away these lands to pay back voting support.

T Boone Pickens Plan
On the "Use it or Loose it" debate, a democrat said even the oilman T Boone Pickens says we can not drill ourselves out of this problem.

Well, as the Democrats did when they interview T.Boone on the hill, they take what they want from his testimony, then shutdown from hearing after that.

If you look closely at T.Boone Picken's commercial, he says use our vast resources of gas.

He means to use gas until the wind or solar is developed and able to deliver to all.

But, where do you suppose those vast reserve of gas are? Off-shore.

21 Attempts to Break a Habit
The test to know a habit is broken is to go without it or with it to break or form a habit for 21 days.

After 21 gouging investigations into the oil companies, do you think congress can break its habit of blaming the oil companies.

It has looked around and found OPEC. NOPE...

It found speculator. NOPE...

Let's see. It has blamed three sources. It needs 18 more blaming sources before it looks in the mirror.

"Use it or Loose it" Voted down
I know this bill did not get its 2/3's vote, just like it didn't before. It just shows some sanity is in our congress.

Doesn't seem the majority leadership keeps bringing back bills hoping to get the vote they want.

And, doesn't seem that the majority leadership deny bringing a bill up for a vote because they know they will not get the vote they want.

It is hardly the reason that was given on NBC. They said congress holds back bills that are more complicated.

Not so complicated, just a simple vote to drill.
Vonnie writes: Saturday, July, 19, 2008 12:49 PM
Speculators, Speculators, Speculators
People that make decisions about our country, the voters and congress, should know some basis of economy.

It is events that move the market, not people.

An option event has three facets. First facet is some time in the future, like three months away. The second facet of the option event is the target price.

For example, a speculator believes the oil price will go higher than $130 in three months so purchases an option Oct2008 $130 get.

This seems like a good deal. But, this can not happen without the other side to fill it.

To fill, someone is willing to sell in Oct2008 at $130 for a Oct2008 $130 put. This put speculator believes the price will go lower than $130 on Oct2008.

If the get speculator wins, then in Oct the oil price is higher than $130. Say $150. In Oct, this speculator can buy oil at $130, then turn around and sell it at the market for $150. Profit is $20.

If the put speculator wins, then in Oct the oil price is lower than $130. Say $110. In Oct, this speculator can buy on the market oil at $110 and turn around and sell the put for $130. Profit is $20.

The last facet is the premium. Because one-to-one get-put relationship, then more people on one side make them willing to pay a higher premium. Whoever is wrong, looses this premium and the opportunity to profit $20.

Where does congress step in? They did this for onions commodity in the 1930. It caused catistraffic swings in the price.

Without these speculators, consumers would have to purchase the high price and because they are all chasing this oil price, it moves even higher.

Then, you will see how far up the oil price can go.

Jeff get real!
If you want to go back in time and lay blame on my republican party I will be right there with you. Both parties have culpability in this mess, but right now the nation needs a solution and the majority of dems are the monkey wrench. They are hurting this country and you and me for the sake of political expediency. This bill is garbage a collection of half measures.Jeff aren't you tired of half measures from your govt.no matter which side of the aisle they come from? Now the dems say they are going to reintroduce this bill next week for the third time! What a waste of time,we need to attack this problem with common sense and urgency for one I am tired of revenge politics it doesn't matter if the politician is a dem or rep their job is to pass meaningful legislation that protects the citizens from these types of national hardships. The Congress has a dem majority,do the math.

Speculators, pt2
Would like to more complete my thought on speculators.

Without the speculators, then when the price goes up, no speculators who believe the price will go down could step in to bet the other way, which would bring the price back down. To continue with my example.

Lets say the price went to $150. The many consumers don't want to pay the price, but it better than going without the oil.

This is where the demand is greater than the supply and some people would be willing to pay more than $150, making the price go up even higher.

The only way the price would come down is drill or people cut into their essential driving.

Either, bring up the supply and/or bring down the demand. No matter how many times the democrats say something else is going on, it is only supply and demand.
Pasadena Phil writes: Saturday, July, 19, 2008 1:46 PM
Vonnie the story for the past two years
on speculators was about how much money they were losing betting at the "peak". They were always wrong and so lots of money was lost. No one ever mentions that. Airlines and pipelines lost tons of money trying to hedge their purchases by trying call and put "collars". They problem is that they were always betting that oil was in going to settle in a range and were wrong. It's not the speculators, it's supply and demand. Like many incompetent speculators, the airlines always blame someone else for their incompetence. The obvious can't possibly be true. Only rubes would believe the obvious.

Drain the Strategic Petroleum Reserve
The Strategic Petroleum Reserve holds 700 million gallons.

We consume 21 million barrels a day. In 28 days, the Strategic Petroleum Reserve is drained.

If you go by the difference of demand and supply, we need 1.5 million barrels per day. This is 1.2 years when the reserve is drained.

Then, what if we have volcano eruptions, earthquakes, hurricanes, more wild fires, and a nuke bombing.

When the firemen, the reserves, or our soldiers can not come to help because they have no fuel to fill their emergency vehicle, what do we do then.

It is sort of like, I want to save my cake, but I decide I can have one piece, then I keep at it and I do not have cake for another day.
Pasadena Phil writes: Saturday, July, 19, 2008 1:53 PM
BTW Michelle, that Bernanke quote
"Just yesterday, at a Financial Services Committee hearing, Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke stated “…a 1 percent increase in supply could lower prices by 10 percent.”"

That it is a tricky statement. The 1% would have to be sustainable and I would have to see what price he is using for a 10% decline. Prices can swing that much on any given day and routinely swing more than that within 2-3 days.

There is too many high-profile people making bogus statements on this subject. Prices are going higher and there is nothing CONSTRUCTIVE AND LASTING anyone can do about it in the near term. We need to drill to buy ourselves time and keep the global warming crowd at bay long enough to discredit them once and for all. We need to drill to slow the price increases and eventually bring them down as alternative energies and better energy consumption strategies take hold.

Whether you like it or not, this country will look very different in ten years. What is at stake is our standard of living. The global warming crowd (Obama and McCain) wants to preserve the high life for the cultural elites while forcing the rest of us into 3rd world existences. If we want a better life for ourselves, we had better start getting our facts straight and start voting our interests instead of holding our noses and voting for the "B" side of the globalist coin.
Vonnie writes: Saturday, July, 19, 2008 1:58 PM
I agree Phil
It is funny that OPEC blames the speculators.

It is like musical chairs. Whoever is without a chair, but can convince they deserve someone else's chair, they are still in the game.

It is all about playing the blame game, not solving the problem.
Pasadena Phil writes: Saturday, July, 19, 2008 2:22 PM
Vonnie: Congressional interference
I watch Congressional hearings routinely. It is a shame that everything has become political but that is the way it is these days. Central planning by the least competent and corrupt among us.

Markets exist to discover price and to efficiently allocate capital where it is most needed. The problem with corrupting that process with politics is that it detracts from markets solving its own problems to be replaced by artificially determining outcomes to serve political purposes. A good example is the weather. We would never (until recently) have thought of complaining to Congress about it being 120 degrees outside. In reality, there is no solution. But Congress would "fix" the problem by rigging the thermometers to read 78 degrees. That is exactly what is going on today. In a desperate attempt to avoid a much needed recession, our government may very well trigger a great depression. Government is just too big.
Vonnie writes: Saturday, July, 19, 2008 6:35 PM
One way should stop corruption
Phil, I'm thinking to stop corruption is to put a light on it.

Once details are known, corrupt people are not re-elected. The only problem is their political commercials represent a squeeky clean view and it is accepted.

When I'm studying investments, I notice that the companies in trouble advertise the most and appear as a wonderful company with a great product.

Good knowledge and truth should work, but falls on deaf ears. Many people continue with their perceived notions. If their notions prove idoitic and wrong, they blame others.
Vonnie writes: Saturday, July, 19, 2008 6:39 PM
Up came a bubbling crude
Oil seepage comes from cracks of the ocean bottom. This is an environmental problem. Drilling would capture that oil and releive this pressure.

Also, gas comes bubbling up from the bottom of the ocean. This does not pollute, it is natural. But, it does us better to capture it than let it go up in the air.
Vonnie writes: Saturday, July, 19, 2008 7:57 PM
Care for the poor means
It appears those that care for the poor seem so greedy about taking money from the rich and oil from other countries.

It is about time to do 'all of the above', but leave out silly notions like Strategic Oil reserve drain, "Use it or Loose it", or blaming history.

This is incredible to me. This Democrat came to the podium. Before her talk, she said what was gas price when Bush took office and what it is today. She wanted to make sure it was on the record. She did not mention it was $2 when he took office and still $2 into the first year the Democrats took office.

Why doesn't anyone mention that Sen. Clinton says vote the democrats in and the gas price will come down? She said they have a plan.

The Democrats said Bush has had no energy plan. In actuality, one of his first proposals was an energy plan that was voted down.

When asked what they have done, they defensively said they did gas price gouging investigations and cafe standards. First, they have done many price gouging investigations before that turned up nothing. Second, the cafe standards do not move auto companies. Their customers do. Today, people are demanding cars with good mph.

So, while capitalism is working quietly behind the scenes, the Democrats are saying see how we have to macro-govern to help our poor.
