This past Saturday and Monday, I held three press events at local gas stations in Ramsey, St. Cloud, and Woodbury to present a commonsense energy plan, the "No More Excuses Act," that Congress can enact to help lower energy costs. Readers of this blog will know that part of this means exploring domestically and tapping into our offshore reserves.

Rasmussen released a new poll finding that 67% of Americans support offshore drilling and 64% expect it to lower prices at the pump. John McCain has come around to tapping into our offshore reserves and we'll all get to see what he has to say this afternoon when he unveils his more extensive energy plan.

Offshore exploration of oil and natural gas will be very helpful in the short term to resolve our energy crisis, and I also understand that alternative energy solutions are the future. But living in the here and now, we need to take all steps within reason to help drive oil costs down. Some suggest a Windfall Profits Tax, but like many of my colleagues, I believe that will only drive up costs to the consumer. That's the last thing we need.

I think it's great McCain is talking about these realistic energy solutions, and I hope Congress will finally act on some of these important measures.

Tomorrow, we may really see if Americans have turned up the heat enough on the Democrat leadership in Congress for them to take action. Rep. John Peterson (R-Pa.) will offer his amendment to allow deepwater energy exploration at an Appropriations Committee markup.  This amendment failed on a party line vote in subcommittee.

Stay Tuned...

Congress has no common sense
You're right. It seems like everyone knows what it will take to help lower prices, but congress doesn't even have a high school level understanding of economics. Up the supply to help lower costs. But they revert to their only solution to everything: either sue it or tax it. Nothing will drive up cost faster and more assuredly than going after the oil companies. Regular guys like me need gas, here and now...my car doesn't run on wind or solar power, and I can afford one that runs on corn.

No more excuses. Drill NOW.

Question for Kimberly
Kimberly, I hear a lot from detractors of drilling of oil here in the US that we don't have enough oil or natural gas for it to matter, but I've never seen any facts or figures to back that up. If there's not enough, how much do we exactly have? What numbers are you working with?
I don't think anyone will argue that we'll have to eventually develop alternative sources of energy and should start on that path now, but if we have enough to supply us for a year, 5 years, 50 years, or 500 years, shouldn't we get it? At the very least, shouldn't we at least explore to see how much we have?

Nonsense
I find it funny the concept that drilling will not bring immediate benefit - therefore we should only put money into unproven technology which is even less likely to bring immediate benefit. And all the while pretending this command and control type approach has never been tried before. Does anyone remember the Synfuels boondoggle?

We know that more oil will bring prices down better than less oil. Our current technology is based on oil - so the only obvious logical thing to do is to throw out oil technology and start with something newer - or something to that effect. Of course, I don't know any libs willing to get rid of their oil based cars on such dreams. They would much prefer brute force to get them to make the correct choices. Maybe they can use rubber band cars or something

All reasonable people are asking is for government to kindly get out of the way. We have the best environmental protections on earth - why we would not want to use them is beyond me. Unless you believe Chinese companies can do the same thing better?

Of course Michele knows best!
God tells her so! Remember, God told Michele to go to law school, told her to marry Marcus and to submit to him, told her to run for Congress. Why, Michele has God right there on her cell phone, right between "Fox News" and "Halliburton". Every time she needs a new issue, she just rings God up and tells him what she wants, and God delivers.

"Hello, God, this is Michele. How can I get re-elected?"

"Why Michele, just lie through your teeth like you always do. Tell them you'll deliver $2-a-gallon gas if they vote for you. Tell them you'll take it all the way down to $.29.9 like it used to be when we had a gas station on every corner and the only gas wars were fought over how cheap you could price your gas. Go talk to Cheney. He'll give you some B.S. numbers to throw around."

"Of course, God, what was I thinking? Lying has always worked for me before. I'm sure I can fool the voters one more time. Can you transfer me over to Julie Quist? I need to reserve some gas stations for my press conferences."

Jesus is on the main line, tell him what you want...

Congress get off your gas & drill Now...

It's mostly the Lib-Dems.. as recently admitted by Elitists Pelosi & Obama, who are in-love with America's burdensome asending gasoline hikes and soaring food prices.. makes US Enemies, Soros and Dem's environmentalist whacko Masters really happy..

I was reminded that the Dem's have yammered about "alternative fuels" since 1973 with the failed Dem Jima Caata induced "gas lines", etc. We need to work on accessing our own US long term, vast ressousces of oil/shale, build mopre refineries, while possibly adding more Nuclear energy plants. Paying farmers to grow food for low-grade biofuel is Traitorous and Retarded!
And forget the Dem's latest "talking points" regarding all those Oil Company "unused drilling leases" BS.

Like Chuck Norris says...Tell Congress to get off their gas, and Drill Now..

McCain is all smoke and mirrors
He is against everything that will get new oil production on line fast (those developed oil fields off of California and Florida) and for most things that will take many years to develop (oil exploration in deep waters). He also only supports states' rights where he knows states will stymie progress (CA and FL) while denying Alaska an opportunity to get their wishes of drilling in ANWR.

Naturally, he is all for unhindered drilling and exploration in the largely exhausted Gulf of Mexico:

http://www.ft.com/cms/s/0/53117fb6-ee43-11dc-a5c1-0000779fd 2ac.html

His real agenda is to lay the groundwork for the new plan for global warming predicated on the global warming religion: Cap and Trade.

Like I keep saying, McCain is a fraud.

And by the way Michelle, it is wrong to keep tantalizing voters with the promise of lower gas prices. Won't happen. We need to drill in order to cap the future increases while buying time to develop new alternative energy technologies. There WILL be a bubble burst in oil prices at some point but that point will almost certainly be much higher and prices will crash to levels that are higher than current prices. We need to accept that or all we are going to fail.
Pasadena Phil writes: Tuesday, June, 17, 2008 9:03 PM
BTW It seems to me that...
Passing a bill to lift government restrictions on drilling and building refineries may be the best way to fend off a Cap and Trade bill later. It would be a major incentive to oil companies if this bill contains language that establishes rights that cannot later be strangled once the enormous amount of capital that is needed is put in motion. That is the main problem facing this industry, the capriciousness of the government.

Oil - Black Gold
Okay, so I have been told we can't drill our way out of this and it would take too long to get anything done. So, if we had been drilling a few years ago, we might be making a dent. The technology has changed in the last 30 and I think it is a lot safer than it used to be.

I heard about ethanol for years, but I have yet to see any of this.

I keep hearing that we need to explore new ways of energy and then I hear different ways. But, where are they?

I know many people are against nuclear power. I live about 20 minutes from a large nuclear plant. Each year I get a paper that tells me if a large earthquake hits on a certain fault and is a certain magnitude, I have 35 seconds before I melt. I know that the technology has come a long way for this too.

Instead of always talking about things, why can't we do any of them? We can't be oil dependent on other countries forever.

Dem Kinards
To name a few absolutely idiotic statements:

"You cannot legislate morality"
"Dissent is the highest form of patriotism"
"Having a president and congress of the same party violates the separation of powers in the Constitution"
"Our strength lies in our diversity"
"You cannot drill your way to energy independence"
"You cannot hug children with nuclear arms"
"The free market does not work with (name of desired and failed liberal program here - education, health care, energy)"
"The problem with (name of desired and failed liberal program here - education, health care, enery) is all these budget cuts!"

5 years
One of the big comebacks is "it wont have real effect for 5 years so lets not do it."

Should we have done it 5 years ago? 10 years ago?
How about now? or should we wait 5 or 10 years and then say the same thing "it wont have real effect for 5 years so lets not do it."

think about the other benefits of starting to drill again offshore, in ANWAR and out west. Shipyards high people to build drill rigs. Equipment manufacturers have to hire people to build equipment. Oil companys hire people to work drill rigs, oil companys have to hire construction workers to build refineries, ets etc.

Money and investments would have profound affecys on our economy. People working in the oil industry make more money and pay more taxes than people flipping burgers or mowing lawns.

Put our people and industries to work now!

Heck NO they dont want to kill the Golden Goose. The Elitist Pigs we call Elected Officials want to keep collecting the Golden Eggs, and playing the game of calling Big Oil on the Carpet once in a while.....see we are trying to control these oil prices, Big Oil is the Villian! There is a Simple Solution to the Oil Prices....Strategic Oil Reserves!

We have no alternatives to Drilling
Most of the alternative energy generated lately seems to be nothing but hot air.

All of the groupism, partisanship. and name calling here that makes people feel like they are winning an argument with regard to the energy crisis is not helping solve the problem. We have a US economic and energy emergency here and people are spouting political sound bites, blaming everybody else, instead of discussing the reality of how much energy will we need and where will it come from.

Lets focus on and deal with data and not emotional opinions.

Can we reasonably replace the energy produced by oil with alternatives in the next 10 years? A gallon of gasoline can produce about 39 kilowatt hours of energy and weighs about 6 pounds. Unless someone can show me the alternative, the answer is no.

Until an alternative energy source that is twice as potent at half the price, and half the weight is available, there will be no incentive for anyone to move away from oil which is still readily available.

Until this alternative energy breakthrough appears, I say Drill!

Democrats Reject OffShore Drilling...

If the Republicans needed a serious "Wedge" issue
for the fall the Democrats just put it in their lap!!!

To listen to Reid, Pelosi and Obama reject out
of hand what 70% of all Americans want is
not only stupid its totally irresponsible...

Thank you Democrats, you just lost the fall election...!!!

Now, McCain, place Romney on the ticket to POUND
Obama on his Tax & Spend agenda...Every day....!!

Fallacious Kimberly
Your entire statement contains both ad hominen, bandwagon fallacies. Because 85% of the americans believes the Bush Adminstration is going in the wrong direction does not mean that drilling for oil is a bad idea.

Keep DRILLING for DRILLING
Dont give up yet. Keep pushing congress. Call your congressperson. Call your senator. Email them. Email Speaker Pelosi. The latest AOL poll (surveying 85,000 last time I checked) has it at about 73% FOR drilling and 22% against.

It's like the dems are the majority in the house, but they're in the minority when it comes to what America wants done about the cost of energy.

Pelosi and the lib-dems are either CLUELESS or downright immoral. This is immoral. It HURTS the little guy, the taxpayer.

If they stick to their schtick, they will lose big in November. But I don't really care about November--I care about gas NOW, today.

WRITE your congressperson, call them, text them, email them, use morse code, use youtube ANYTHING. Hammer them, drill them to get on this NOW.

Gee 3 press conferences at 3 different gas stations? Holy Moley Michele, you really must be full of gas of another sort. Perhaps we could be energy efficient if we drilled your hind end for an endless supply.

POLLS
SINCE LIBS are always quoting POLLS then they shouldnt have no problem quoting this POLL:

67% of Americans people say DRILL NOW. I wonder if as they claim to represent the people for change and HOPE will they HOPE this POLL GOES AWAY.

The last time this happened and the American people spoke out it was AGAINST ILLEGAL AMNESTY now lets see if they are REALLY FOR THE PEOPLE.

I think you need to read your history books a little bit better.

You said, "I was reminded that the Dem's have yammered about "alternative fuels" since 1973 with the failed Dem Jima Caata induced "gas lines", etc."

If you would have paid a little better attention in history class, you would know that in 1973 Richard Nixon (a republican) was president not "Jima Caata". It was your people who were in charge during the last oil crisis just like it was your people who were in charge when the decisions were made that has lead to this crisis.

Sorry to burst your bubble but don't let facts get in the way of your thinking.

Breaking the Law of Supply and Demand
We need offshore drilling like we need a hole in the head. When are people going to realize that they are being used by those who are getting rich off of oil.

Why drill for oil? It will eventually run out. Common sense says to immediately shift to renewable energy. We have that in abundance.

I am a Conservative and a Republican. I do not care about the oil companies. If they are too stupid to realize that oil is nonrenewable and want to continue to peddle a product that has to run out, then they deserve to go out of business.

To hear someone talk about supply and demand when the supply is inevitably going to run out is absurd.

This reminds me of these loser business owners who claim that they will go out of business if they can't hire illegal alien labor. (Make that take advantage of people when they're down.)

If you can't run your business without breaking the law then you went into the wrong business! Moron. And if the law of supply and demand is dependent on a supply that cannot last, then you also are in the wrong business.
